The Bernina 730 Record is a great little machine. If the selector levers are sticky/stuck or the handwheel is stiff or does not turn, about 98% of the time the machine needs oil.

Mechanical machines need to be cleaned and oiled regularly just like your car. If the machine sets in storage for a while or is used often but not oiled or cleaned regularly, the oil that exists in the machine will eventually thicken and acts like glue. (Sometimes you can see a dirty-looking dark gold or brownish goop which is usually old oil.) Then your machine is frozen.

First, open the top and bottom of the machine and sweep out any dust, dirt, lint, or stray threads.

Now, oil your machine (there's a diagram below). There are quite a few oil holes (both in the top and bottom of a Bernina mechanical) that require periodic oiling (see your machine Manual). If a metal part is frozen, buy a bottle of liquid Tri-Flow Synthentic Oil (from the hardware store) and put one or two drops in all the spots shown in the manual. (DO NOT oil rubber parts, the two white plastic gears, the belts, or the metal CAMs!!! NEVER use 3-in-1 oil, cooking oil, WD-40, or oil from your grandma's sewing box. And do not put more than one or two drops of oil at a time as over-oiling will also damage your machine.) It also helps to slowly hand rotate the handwheel and, while watching things that move, apply 1-2 drops of oil every place that metal rubs against metal. Do this also with the selectors and dials.

Then, using your hand-held hair dryer, direct hot air into the internal part of the machine (top and bottom). The metal may become hot to the touch. Then try to gently move the handwheel and the selector levers. Repeat. Let it set overnight. Then test again the next day, and repeat the process if needed.

To maintain your machine, a good recommendation is to oil every time the bobbin thread is changed, every 8 hours of constant sewing, or every six months if the machine is not in use. Use a good quality oil, ie Bernina oil for "mechanical" machines. When oiling, also be sure to brush out the dust and lint (especially around the feed dogs and bobbin works).

If the oil in your tube looks dark colored, throw it out and get some new. I've run across some old sewing machine oil in the can that looked like dark honey and stunk to high heaven. Get rid of it!

Treat your machine well and it will serve you well for many years.

This is an oiling diagram of an 830 Record which is very similar to the 730.

SOURCE: Bernina 730 Can't open top cover !

The problem is that of a stuck piston detent on the pattern selector support that snaps the top cover closed.

  1. Open the light cover
  2. Apply pressure with thumbs on the bottom edge of the top cover on both the right and left sides of the cover. The cover should pop up...Too much pressure on the left side, (if this thing is really stuck) and you might break the top cover at the thread tension slot. Be careful here....
  3. Add a drop of acetone (fingernail polish remover) to the piston detent and work it free by pushing it back and forth. Avoid getting any acetone on the painted surfaces of the machine.
  4. Continue to work free, repeating with a few drops of acetone, and wipe clean. Don't oil this part. It was a petroleum product combined with a galvanic process (aluminum and steel) that caused the problem in the first place, not to mention age.
  5. Use DTE Heavy Medium oil rather than a white or clear oil when you lubricate your machine. White oils are unstable and will oxidize (decay) much more quickly. Also avoid 3 in 1 oil and stuff like WD40....very bad....
  6. Oil 1/2 a drop on those prescribed areas. Too much oil is more harmful than not enough....
  7. Contact your Bernina dealer for this oil.

SOURCE: My Bernina 730 record can only run the zig-zag

Sewing machines needs full service now and then (every 10 years will often do). The motor on the 730 series is actually as powerful as they get on domestic machines, and handles just about everything that fits under the pressure foot. Only if the machine has been used a lot over the years are the brushes worn down, but it might need new grease not matter how little it has been used.

However, the stitch applications can sort of gum or clog up if the machine has not been used for ages. Take a look in the manual and oil ever point suggested every time you take out the machine. Try them now and then on slow speed, that might get every function to run smoothly again.

This is as good a machine as any out there, favorably compared to any new machine under 500£. It sews perfect stitches on just about any material, and is well worth a full professional service (At a shop they will always recommend a new machine they want to sell you). All kinds of pressure feet and accessories are available in regular sewing shops and online.

Check with different shops for price on full service. This is a great machine what ever they tell you.

SOURCE: bernina 730 cam gear replacement and alignment

It does not matter where the position of the camstack is when you put it in, it should not affect any other part of the machine.

I have a Bernina 930 record, zigzag stitch it misses some zigzag stitches & does straight stitches

If your Bernina 930 record sewing machine is experiencing issues with zigzag stitches and straight stitches, here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:
  1. Check the needle: Ensure that the needle is properly inserted and not bent or dull. Replace the needle if necessary, making sure to use the correct needle type and size for the fabric you are sewing.
  2. Adjust the stitch width and length: Verify that the stitch width and length settings are properly adjusted for the desired zigzag stitch. Refer to your machine's user manual for instructions on how to adjust these settings correctly.
  3. Clean and lubricate the machine: A build-up of lint or lack of lubrication can affect the machine's performance. Clean the bobbin area and other accessible parts of the machine using a soft brush or lint brush. Apply a drop of sewing machine oil to the recommended areas as specified in the user manual.
  4. Check the tension: Improper tension can lead to skipped stitches. Ensure that the upper thread tension is properly adjusted for the fabric and thread you are using. Consult the user manual for guidance on adjusting the tension correctly.
  5. Test with different fabrics and threads: Try sewing on different fabrics using different types of thread to determine if the issue is specific to certain materials. This will help identify whether the problem lies with the machine or the materials being used.
  6. Have the machine serviced: If the above steps do not resolve the issue, it may be necessary to have your Bernina 930 record serviced by a professional. There could be underlying mechanical issues that require expert attention.
It's important to note that the Bernina 930 record is a vintage sewing machine, and finding a qualified technician with experience working on older models may be beneficial if further repairs or adjustments are needed.

Bernina 730 how do I change feed dog pressure it is way to high not touching fabric when down??? Help please

There are actually two Bernina 730 machines (confusing, huh?). One is the 730 Record from around 1960. The other is the more modern 730 computerized model made in the 21st century.

The 730 Record has a hidden pressure adjustment. Lift the top cover and locate the screwhead on the very left side (left of the takeup lever knuckles). This screw loosens or tightens the spring that applies pressure on the presser foot.
The manual can be downloaded here, although it does not show the pressure adjustment:
BERNINA Sewing Systems

On the computerized 730, the pressure adjustment is on the screen (pg 37 of the manual):

Bernina 730 Record Service manual

Service manuals are difficult to find for most sewing machines, which Bernina is not an exception. However, there is a Yahoo Group called "BerninaThirtySomethings" that has conversations, documents, photos, etc. for the vintage Berninas including the 730 Record. You can join the group (must have a Yahoo email account) and download a variety of documents including a "Setting Manual" for the 730.

How do I fix the zigzag on the bernina 930

1. The switching pawl (lever on the top cover that switches from zigzag to cam patterns) may be engaged in the cam or automatic pattern side. Check that first.
For zigzag application, the lever must be engaged in the zigzag side (lever pulled back toward the operator). The stitch width dial is then used to provide your choice of width.
--------------
2. It is common, due to oil varnishes, that the switching pawl that is actuated by this lever is stuck between the zigzag and the automatic position, thus preventing the transmission of power to either the zigzag cam or the automatic pattern cams and to the needle.
The best way to detect this is to remove the top cover. You can then switch the lever back and forth to observe if the switching pawl engages firmly into either of the receiving forks. If the switching pawl is sticking, a few drops of certain solvents are applied by a technician on the switching pawl support. The switch lever can be rapidly switched back and forth until you see the switching pawl engage into the receiving forks and you hear a crisp clicking during each engagement. This repair can be permanent or it may create only a temporary fix due to the amount of oil varnishes on the parts.
If the machine is heavily varnished, it suggested that the parts be disassembled and cleaned for flawless performance. If the machine had been sprayed with WD-40, petroleum based solvents like mineral spirits will not break down these varnishes.
A caution regarding solvents...DO NOT USE (WD-40) as your solvent. WD-40 is a marvelous product for its intended application as a water displacement device. It is not to be used for lubricating a sewing machine. Note: "Bernina Technical Information bulletin #1" issued in 1982, forbade the use of such spray lubricants and solvents. SewTechnical Home

My Bernina 830 sewing machine will not do a zigzag stich

We are assuming that the zigzag width dial is at the widest position but the needle will not move laterally for zigzag... The following logic should be applied for Bernina machines 530, 730, 830, 930 machines with a guided motion zigzag cam.

1. The switching pawl (lever on the top cover that switches from zigzag to cam patterns) may be engaged in the cam or automatic pattern side. Check that first.

Supply of new stitch cog for Bernina 830 Record

I don't know what a stitch cog is by your definition but I suspect that you may be referring to the cam stack worm gear, part # 310 007 03. These gears are available, however those produced and sold as after market parts online have ranged from bad to very bad. I would suggest that you find an OEM part (not a reproduction) that are still available from time to time on EBAY etc.
Changing the gear is not as straight forward as it may look. The proper replacement requires: 1. removal of the cam stack without damaging the machine parts, 2. removal and installation of the new gear with the correct alignment of the individual cams, 3. installation of the cam stack and pattern indicator without axial play, 4. correct parabola timing of the main-shaft worm wheel and cam stack gear, 5. synchronization of the zigzag and automatic cam parabolas, 6. pattern indicator timing, 7. checking and adjusting the automatic needle position.
