Error 23 when connecting USB hard drive to car

I get the 'error 23' when I connect my external USB hard drive to USB port of the car audio system.

You must format the USB to FAT32..! Works for me!

My car audio only accepts USB less than 2GB and it must be FAT32 formatted.

Your Stereo does not support USB hard drives. They only work with smaller USB drives.

    i had the same issue,i just formatted my usb and converted it into FAT mode.it worked for me.. :)

When i plug in the usb to my computer it is not recognized and does not show anywher

External drive not picked up on computer


External hard drives not only provide additional storage space on a computer system but also allow data to be conveniently transported from one computer to another.


These drives typically plug right in to a port on the computer and function without any additional setup; however, if you are running into trouble where your external hard drive is not being detected, you must troubleshoot the situation to determine why the drive appears to be missing.


Check the USB connection running from the hard drive to your computer.

If the USB cable is not seated securely in the port, the computer will not detect the external drive.


Disconnect the USB cable from the computer and plug it into a different USB port. Occasionally, a USB port will fail to function with some hardware and changing the USB connection may correct this issue.


Switch from a USB to a Firewire cable connection, if possible.

The USB port on the hard drive may have died; if so, changing to a Firewire connection will resolve this issue.


Install the driver for the external device from the installation disc provided with the product. Older computer systems may require you to manually install this driver.


After inserting the installation CD, follow the prompts from the installation wizard to install the driver on your computer.


Restart the computer.

If you connected the external drive while the computer is powered down, it may not recognize the device when you turn on the computer.


After restarting the computer, connect the external drive to the system.

The drive should now be detected by your operating system.


Connect the external hard drive to a power source and then plug it into your PC computer using a USB or Firewire cable.

I have the simple tech 250 gb mini and i got music put onto it so i can plug it into my car staero usb port. it works on the computer but says error 23 in the car whats wrong?


Could be:
- The hard disk is formatted in NTFS (this is usually the default format if you have a windows PC
- The hard disk is formatted in Mac format (if you have an Apple Mac)
- The car stereo 's USB port is not providing enough power for the drive to operate.
- Your car stereo may not support hard drive larger than a particular size. look at your manual to see what it supports

For the first 2 issue try reformatting the hard disk in FAT32 format this is the most common.

Western Digital Passport 160 GB external HD won't load.


WinXP SP2 blocks the use of the drive because it thinks it draws too much power. But there is a simple procedure to override this (from WD site):

"Problem:
Under Windows XP, an error message of "Power Surge on Hub Port" or "USB device has exceeded the power limits of it's hub port" is displayed when connecting a USB device to a USB port on a computer or Hub.

Cause:
Under some computers, USB devices are only allowed to draw a maximum of 500 milliamps (mA) per connection from the USB port on the computer system or from a USB hub. Under the Windows XP Operating System, with the release of Service Pack 2, if a device attempts to draw more than this (500 milliamps), a USB port balloon message is displayed to indicate this over current condition. When connecting a USB device that draws power from the USB bus, a very brief over current condition is sometimes detected by the OS, and the warning message is displayed.

Resolution:
This message has no affect on the functionality of the USB port. The USB hard drive should still function correctly on the USB port regardless of the error message. To prevent the USB Power Surge Alert message from displaying, please complete the following steps:
Click on Start.

Click on Control Panel.

Double-click on the System Icon.

Click on the Hardware Tab.

Click on the Device Manager button.

Click on the + next to Universal Serial Bus Controllers to expand the selection.

Right-click and select Properties on any listing that displays USB UNIVERSAL HOST CONTROLLER.

Click on the Advanced Tab.

Check the box that says: Don't tell me about USB errors."

This works fine, and the drive works fine afterwards. I suspect it actually draws less power than they say. Maybe it has a brief power draw spike on startup, but it's running power seems less. In any case, it works fine without the Y cable. I do think it is tacky that WD doesn't give the cable for free, since my $7 Sabrent 2.5" Hard drive enclosure came with a y cable.

But most likely the drive will work fine for you. It is a lovely quiet drive, and takes up no space at all.

USB DEVICE NOT WORKING


With some external hard drives, the usb port doesn't carry enough power to run it properly, especially with thw newer externals. Does it give you an error message?

plz check your usb port if other device read ...........then your external hard disk so error. or if ex hard ok...you install windows vista .
