I red Information banner came on then it shut down.I have not been able to start it since then.I have tried charging it from the cradle and the power light on the top of the M% does not light up either orange or green. Why is a voltage problem when the unit was working and then went into shutdown after the battery low and GPS Update warning came up?

  • nicholson_ro Jul 13, 2009

At the moment my PC doesn't recognise the M5.

Are you saying to reload all software and then try to start it?

  • nicholson_ro Jul 16, 2009

Hi

You need to hard reset the unit. To do this;

With the unit off > Remove the back cover of the unit > Remove the battery > Replace the back cover > Sync the unit in the cradle without the battery inserted > Replace the battery > Replace back cover.

*Please note all saved data will be lost.

Hope this helps. Please remember to rate my answer. Many Thanks.

Note: If the hard reset fails then you have an internal component failure and the unit will have to go back to Garmin for repair.

Another hard reset for the M series is as follows - however this is unlikely to work if your unit will not power on at all

To perform a hard reset, hold the 'Contacts' button and 'Record' button down while pressing and releasing the 'Reset' button. Two confirmation questions will appear for clearing Random Access Memory (RAM) and clearing user storage in Read Only Memory (ROM). These questions can be answered by pressing the physical buttons below "Yes" and "No".

Answer "Yes" to the first question to erase all data in RAM (programs, settings, files, personal data, etc.). To also delete all files in the internal "Safe Storage" area, answer "Yes" to the second question.

As I say the best hard reset option is the first I mentioned as you state the unit will not power up at all - however it is worth trying this procedure to see if the unit might fire up under this button combination.

Hope this helps and you don't have to end up sending it back to Garmin but remember if components have failed internally this will be the only other option.

Don't forget! Please rate my answer. Many Thanks.

    Hi Ross,

Yes its very unfortunate for this to happen. Must be internal component failure and will have to go back to Garmin if those hard resets have failed - there is no other solution.

Please remember to choose which expert gave you the best solution as I believe you have other answers on this. If you accept my answer please do so or it will credit to the previous expert who answered first.

If the previous expert gave a better solution please credit to them as you see fit.

    Many Thanks

Hello there, it sounds like for certain you are having a voltage issue, you have tried every possible solution to no avail. Since you have tried the new battery there is really no other possibility. I have seen way too many of these come through with this same issue, always a voltage issue.

I don't want to have you spinning your wheels so to speak with troubleshooting I am certain won't work.

Please give Garmin a call at 1-800-800-1020 to confirm.

The unit is going to need some repairs for certain. They can point you in the right direction for sure as far as a local repair place is concerned, or most likely they will have you send it in.

I am so sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I am very certain this is the case.

Hope this helps!

Thanks,

Tim G

Well, first off you never mentioned anything about the GPS update part until just now, and I still believe it could be a voltage issue. If it is not voltage related then the software has somehow become corrupted on the PDA / GPS and will need to be reloaded. I would suggest you get the latest software updates for the device, or just any software update for that matter and try to apply it. Some can be found at:

    http://www8.garmin.com/support/collectio...

If the software update / restore does not remedy the problem then I would still think it's voltage related. Meaning the voltage regulator inside the device. You will want to give Garmin a call for sure if the software update doesn't work.

    Thanks
    Tim

I am talking about reloading all the software on the PDA yes, not all the software on your computer.

Yes it is a battery issue. Take out the battery and spin it on a shiny flat surface. If it spins, even the slightest, that indicates a swollen battery and it won't hold a charge or charge completely.

Hi
then you look at the cables that attach to the battery, the better the positive battery cable that lands on a black box with a red connector. what it usually is "roasted" 'cause faulty contact between the tabs (male-female) oxide can usually do ... or is it current controller and that 'that sort of plate with two holes for screws M6 or M5 on the side that goes to the dogs ... changing it and finding it on ebay or other sites or ads you should see it

Which knob on the bushnell banner scope will raise the bullet when it is hitting six inches low?

It's a common misconception that you are moving the bullet's impact on the target... the bullet is hitting where the rifle is pointing and you want to get the scope to look at that same spot.
To move the scope's reticle up or down, turn the adjustment on the TOP of the cope in the direction you want the scope to look, so if your shooting low, turn the scope's adjustment in the DOWN direction.
