i would try first of all replace the fuel filter and check clean or replace your air filter. Personally I think it is going to be the fuel filter that is clogging and causing this. And for little cost replace the plug and make sure it is gaped right.

If the mower has been tipped up oil will now have entered the air filter box and soaked the paper air filter, remove the filter and run the engine to see if the oil burns away and the engine runs normally, do not over fill the engine with oil, fill only to the max mark on the dip stick.
SOURCE: how to add oil to snapper lawn mower
if there is no dip stick then look about a inch above the base of the engine for a plastic screw about 1/2'' in dia

SOUNDS LIKE THE OIL HAS FLODDED THE SPARK PLUG. REMOVE THE SPARK PLUG AND CLEAN IT USEING A WIRE BRUSH AND SOME BREAK PARTS CLEANER. THEN DROP SOME OF THE OIL OUT. YOU MAY HAVE PUT TOO MUCH IN THE ENGINE. THE SMOKING WAS CAUSED BY THE OIL BEEING BURNED BY THE SPARK PLUG. SOME HOW OIL GOT IN THERE. TRY CLEANING THE INSIDE OF THE SPARK PLUG OPENING WITH SOME CARB CLEANER. PUT THE SPARK PLUG BACK IN AND TRY TO START IT. REMEMBER IF THE SPARK PLUG IS FOULED UP, IT WILL RUN POORLY OR NOT AT ALL.
