Its shows up at the top, when you press Volume Up/Down. It shows the squares being filled up and the volume does increase and decrease. At the loudest setting, i can barely hear it.

How can I turn volume down on the ringer?

It depends what mobile your using, **** in general exists 2 usual ways you can do that. the first is the easiest, on the right or left side of the phone there must be a button with + and - sign on each end. the other way going to menu, settings, sounds or something similar.

How do I turn up the volume to hear people talking louder...all I can find is how to turn up the ringer volume...

On most mobile phones this is a setting hidden somewhere in the "Settings" or "Options" menu, but the easiest way to to fix it is with a simple phone call. While you are currently on a call with another person, you can turn the speaker volume up using the same button to turn up the ringer volume.

Note that this will only work if you try to turn up the volume while the phone on the other end is ringing or you are currently connected on a call.
