Tv playing great then blank screen with red light blinking. Question is what component has gone bad and is it a plug in module, and what does it cost to replace?

Hello,
the error light sequence that you are seeing is indicating a "backlight error". Most likely you have a bad inverter board -the board that powers up the back-lights behind the display panel. They might be available via ebay if you are a DIYer, or you need to call for sony service.

3. When red power light starts blinking--COUNT THE BLINKS.
4. THREE BLINKS, pause, THREE BLINKS (ETC) IS SHORT PROTECTION AND A DO IT YOURSELF repair for some people. I have complete instructions for this repair.
5. 5 blinks, pause and 5 blinks etc is short on 140 volt line and while not as easy as 3 blink error code it points to places to look at.

It is rear projection TV that use 3 picture tubes of red-green-blue to show color picture on tv front screen. Do you see standby red light blinking when TV shuts off after showing blue image for a while? If red standby light is blinking, please count it how many times it blinks, there would be 3 seconds pause between blinks so count pause to pause and post it here to find out possible solution. timer/standby indicator blinks for about 30 seconds then goes to the
self-diagnosis function. Something is wrong with the video. Check video
out, Q705, 732, 761 and other components on the C board, also check
Q218, 219, 220 on the A board. In addition, unit could be in IK
blanking, try turning up screen slightly.
Generally speaking whent he set shuts itself down, the standby light will blink a code. This will be a count followed by a short pause and then the count again etc.
When teh set shuts down, count the blinks and post it here. That will indicate the circuit that has the problem.
The red light should be blinking a code. For example it will blink 4 times pause then 4 times pause or 5times pause 5 times pause, whatever the error might be. Let me know what it is and then we can help more.
