When installing my officejet 6500 wireless all in one to my laptop, I did not first insert the printhead into the device that holds the ink cartridges. (I inserted the cartridges into that container without the printhead and was told the cartridgs appear to be damaged or missing.) When I finally found the printhead, I inserted it into the device and then clicked in the ink cartridges. The printer continued to tell me the ink cartridges were damaged or missing. After cleaning the metal contacts, unplugging everything from the printer, uninstalling an then reinstalling the program, the printer no longer tells me that the cartridges are damaged, only that they appear to be missing, but that seems to be the only progress that has been made since my first attempt. The ink cartridges are brand new. I used them to replace the original cartridges that were incorrectly placed into the casing without the printhead. The printer will not function without

As dumb as it may sound, i want to know first if you took off the clear tape like protector that covers the ink cartridges nozzle and contacts? It often is so small and transparent that most people don't notice it and don't remove it before installing the cartridges. If you did remove all the clear protectors on the new ink cartridges, then there is probably a problem with the print head. Check to see if you didn't bend or break some of the contacts that connect the print head to the printer when you installed the cartridges before installing the print head. If everything appears to be fine as far as the contacts and leads go, then the problem is much more major and will require servicing by a technician. If you are still under warranty, return it for repairs directly to HP, if you are not under warranty anymore, you might want to consider shopping for a new printer instead, as most new printers cost less that the ink that goes into them nowadays. Not printing correct colors all come out light brown or pink


For severe HP OJ 6500/6500A/7000 print quality/missing color issues, or incorrect color output, there could be an air bubble in the ink cartridge(s), an air gap between cartridge and PRINTHEAD, or a portion of the PRINTHEAD is dry (quite common), so you should first perform a CLEAN PRINTHEAD procedure from your printer control panel.
It is first suggested you print the SELF TEST or PRINT QUALITY REPORT (under TOOLS menu) to aid in identifying which color is causing the issue. Check that cartridge or cartridges to ensure they have plenty of ink inside.
NOTE: If one or more the colors were previously dry fired during printing (i.e. if you continued printing using only a few colors to one, air may have been accidently ingested into the ink lines between the cartridge(s) and PRINTHEAD. To recover from this problem, you may have to run the CLEAN PRINTHEAD procedure 2-3 times.
If a problem persists then it is suggested to review the steps outlined on the following HP 920 support pages, including printhead removal/printer cleaning and service station cleaning. It is suggested you refer to printer manufacturer instructions first as the Inkjet411 procedures are provided for general guidance purposes only. If the problem still cannot be corrected, then the PRINTHEAD may be dry and may need to be flushed (i.e. with warm water as it could have dried out, but this is a function of how much you print). I just replaced by black ink on HP Officejet 6500. It will not print black thought it maybe the cartridge I replaced it again. Still want print. I tried three new cartridges. The color works...

The following may work: remove all the ink supplies. Remove the printhead and soak it for about 5 minutes in 0.5" of very hot water. Gently blot the printhead on a soft damp paper towel to remove the excess water, then replace in the printer and then reinstall the ink supplies.

Printer loads paper and goes through the same process it used to when printing but it spits out a blank sheet of paper. It got a new back ink cartridge in it.


Try Cleaning the Cartridges manually and automatically.
For the cartridge clean it with a damp lint free cloth and also for the printheads wher eyour gonna be inserting the cartridges.
Follow these steps do do the automatic aligning and cleaning:
Click Start and then go to Printers and Faxes (XP), Printers(Vista), Devices and Printers(Win 7)
1. Right Click on your printer Icon 2. Go to Printing Preferences 3. Click the Features Tab 4. At the bottom of the window you will see Printer Services or Device Services. Click on it. 5. Choose Align Printheads on the list.

For Cleaning the Printheads, Instead of choosing Align Printer choose Clean Printheads.

Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer
While the printer is unplugged, press and hold # & 6 together on the printer
Hold them for 30 seconds and then plug the power cord in the printer while holding the buttons
Release the buttons after 6 secs of plugging the power cord
Then the printer would as you to select the language and location
Then it would ask you to insert the printheads and the cartridges, so please insert it
Then printer would do it normal procedure like it does when you use the printer for the first time
This particular step would reset the printer back to the factory settings
Hope it would resolve the issue

hello, i'm sorry about the problem you are having, the problem will probably be 2 fold, one is printhead, and last maybe inks, hp recommends taking inks and printhead and cleaning contacts, and re-installing, and try again, what i have done was go thru chat on hp's web site and explaine that i have done all they're instruction, and nothing worked, they eventually sent me new printhead and inks. i would try going that route, the chat was better than trying to call they're phone support.

Brand new Officejet. trying to installprint head and cartridges keep getting error to install printhead. I have re-installed it a dozen times and I still get this message

Try the below 3 resets one after the other, if 1st one didn't work.

Power Drain:

  • Turn OFF the printer, disconnect the power cable from backside of the printer and from wall outlet.
  • Press and hold the Power button for 60 seconds.
  • Connect the cable and turn ON the printer.

Partial Reset

  • Remove the power cable from back side of the printer while its ON.
  • Press and hold "#" and "3" button, while holding them both insert the power cable and release the button after 10 seconds.
  • If printer turns OFF, press power button to turn it ON.

Semi-Full reset


  • Remove the ink cartridges.
  • Remove the power cable from back side of the printer while its ON.
  • Press and hold "#" and "6" button, while holding them both insert the power cable and release the button after 10 seconds.
  • If printer turns OFF, press power button to turn it ON.
  • Insert the ink cartridges.

My 6500 wireless printer just started telling me ink failure...what do I do now. I have installed a new black ink cartridge already



Forgive me for asking this, but roughly speaking about 80 to 95% of problems involving ink or toner are resolved by the following:
Are you using a factory new ink cartridge supplied by the manufacturer of the printer?
If you are using a refilled or third party cartridge that may well be your problem. Most manufacturers build logic into their products to prevent the use of “Other Equipment Manufactured” cartridges as well as re-filled cartridges.
They do this to prevent problems from contaminated inks causing problems with print quality or damaging the physical printhead.
