Carrier A/C making buzzer noise every 6 minutes.

The air conditioning portion of my day & night HVAC system (model 565BJX030000AAAA) is making a 4-5 second buzzer noise every 6 minutes. It sounds just like my dryer at the end of the cycle. It's 20 years old. What's going bad on it?

Probably the contactor, they have a coil that sometimes buzzes, after the contacts become pitted and no loger pull together like they are supposed to. It could also be a voltage problem from the transformer that is causing it, but I would bet on the contactor. Get it fixed quickly as a voltage drop across the contactor can be the demise of you compressor!

DESCRIPTION A manual temperature control (MTC) single zone type heating-A/C system or a manually controlled heater-only system is standard equipment on this model, depending on market.
To maintain the performance level of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system, the engine cooling system must be properly maintained. The use of a bug screen is not recommended. Any obstructions in front of the radiator or A/C condenser will reduce the performance of the A/C and engine cooling systems.
The engine cooling system includes the radiator, thermostat, radiator hoses and the engine coolant pump. Refer to 7 - Cooling for more information before opening or attempting any service to the engine cooling system.

All vehicles are equipped with a common heater, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) housing (1). The heating-A/C system combines heating, ventilating and A/C (if equipped) capabilities in a single HVAC housing mounted within the passenger compartment beneath the instrument panel. The HVAC housing includes:
  1. Mode-air doors (2)
  2. A/C evaporator (A/C system only) (3)
  3. Recirculation-air door and actuator (A/C system only) (4)
  4. Blower motor (5)
  5. Mode control cable (6)
  6. Temperature control cable (7)
  7. Heater core (8)
  8. Blend-air door (9)
On heater-only systems, the A/C evaporator is omitted from the HVAC housing and is replaced with an air restrictor plate.
Based upon the system mode selected, conditioned air can exit the standard heater-only or optional heater-A/C housing through one or a combination of the three main housing outlets: defrost, panel or floor. The defrost and panel outlets are located on the top of the HVAC air distribution housing and the floor outlets are located on each side of the distribution housing. Once the conditioned air exits the HVAC housing, it is further directed through molded plastic ducts to the various outlets within the vehicle interior. These outlets and their locations are as follows:
  1. Defroster Outlet- A single large defroster outlet is located in the center of the instrument panel top cover, near the base of the windshield.
  2. Side Window Demister Outlets- There are two side window demister outlets, one is located at each outboard end of the instrument panel top cover, near the belt line at the A-pillars.
  3. Panel Outlets- There are four panel outlets in the instrument panel, one located near each outboard end of the instrument panel facing the rear of the vehicle and two located near the top of the instrument panel center bezel.
  4. Front Floor Outlets- There are two front floor outlets, one located on each side of the center tunnel near the dash panel.
  5. Rear Floor Outlets- There are two rear floor outlets, one located on each side of the floor panel center tunnel near the front of each rear seat foot well.
  6. REMOVAL
    WARNING: Disable the airbag system before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for the airbag system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the airbag system. Failure to follow these instructions may result in accidental airbag deployment and possible serious or fatal injury.

Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.

Recover the refrigerant from the refrigerant system (Refer to Heating and Air Conditioning/Plumbing - Standard Procedure).

Partially drain the engine cooling system (Refer to Cooling - Standard Procedure).

Remove the top nut (2) that secures the heat shield (3) to the stud (1) located on the dash panel.

NOTE

Two slots are provided at the bottom of the heat shield to aid in heat shield removal. Complete removal of the two bottom heat shield retaining nuts is not required.

Reach behind the engine and remove the two bottom nuts the that secure the heat shield to the studs located on the dash panel and remove the heat shield. Rotate and tilt the heat shield as required.

Remove the bolt (1) that secures the A/C liquid and suction line assembly (2) to the A/C evaporator (3).

Disconnect the A/C liquid and suction line assembly from the A/C evaporator and remove and discard the dual-plane seals.

Install plugs in, or tape over the opened refrigerant line fittings and the evaporator ports.

Disconnect the heater hoses (4) from the heater core tubes. Install plugs in, or tape over the opened heater core tubes to prevent coolant spillage during housing removal.

Make sure to remove the five bolts that secure the HVAC housing to the instrument panel support prior to removing the instrument panel from the vehicle.

Remove the nut (1) that secures the passenger side of the HVAC housing (2) to the dash panel (3).

Use care to ensure that the interior is covered in case of loss of residual fluids from the heater and evaporator cores.

Pull the HVAC housing rearward and remove the HVAC housing assembly from the passenger compartment.

Remove the left side front floor duct (Refer to Heating and Air Conditioning/Distribution/DUCT, Floor Distribution - Removal).

NOTE

If the foam seal for the flange is deformed or damaged, it must be replaced.

Remove the foam seal (1) from the flange (2) located on the front of the HVAC housing (7).

Remove the screw (8) that secures the flange to the front of the HVAC housing and remove the flange.

Remove the screws (3) that secure the heater core tube retaining brackets (6) to the side of the air distribution housing (4).

On RHD models, remove the air distribution housing from the HVAC housing (Refer to Heating and Air Conditioning/Distribution/HOUSING, HVAC - Removal)

Carefully pull the heater core (5) out of the driver side of the air distribution housing.

Carrier Compressor Issues?


When you shut it off and back on it slugged the compressor if you turn it off and back on before the pressures equalize between the high and low sides it will slug the compressor and it will not run should let sit for five minutes or so before restarting. The humming is either the compressor making noise usually common for the compressor to make some noise or the fan motor bearings are getting bad on the outside unit. If the unit works normal probably not much you can do till it breaks if it is the compressor it is more economical to replace the whole unit if it is just the fan motor it is worth changing. You could take an amp draw on the fan motor and the compressor to see if the are within the limits on the name plate of the outside unit.

Sounds like the contactor is bad.It has a magnate that pulls in with a call for cooling,It will buzz like crazy sometimes.

(HVAC) Furnace Not Igniting Quickly


Make sure a back draft in the flue is not happening. Wind can blow it out until the flue heats up. The flame sensor may not be close enough to the burner flame. It may be weak and need to be replaced or if its an optical one it may be dirty and not see the flame very well. Its not wasting much gas but it puts extra wear and tear on the gas controls, is noisy, and, as you said, blows cold drafty air. A gas control system that has issues of any kind is not real safe. It needs to get fixed.
