It could be a bad memory stick or a loose one .check the memory to make sure it is installed correctly. I could also indicate a hard drive failure. Hope this helps. Bob

Most likely a hard drive issue. Might have a corrupt boot sector, might be a failing hard drive. Remove HDD and see if you can boot to a windows CD, if you can then the issue is with the drive.
Try starting windows in safe mode by tapping F8 repeatedly right after you press the power button - a black and white screen will appear asking if you want to start in safe mode - the arrow keys select the mode, press enter, let it load fully then use the start menu to shut down and restart normally. Windows is simply telling you it cannot load properly this restores a good configuration again for it to use. Regarding wiggling the power cord - possibly the plugin is either loose or broken inside and the joints that connect it may have to be resoldered, the case has to be taken apart for that. One beep usually means all is well on IBM, three beeps indicate a problem, not necessarily only memory. The bios (F1 or F2 usually) may contain an error log indicating exactly what the problem is and will be indicated by a number code - IBM has a list on their site of what the number codes mean. Occasionally the error code may display on the screen upper corner on start up if you wait for it to show after the beeps.
Start the computer and enter the BIOS menu. Change the 'boot priority' or 'boot order so that the CD drive is before the HDD. Save your settings and restart the computer.
Enter the windows CD and press a key when prompted to load from the CD. Windows has a series of utilities that may (or may not) assist you in sorting the various error messages that appear on your computer when booting.
One long beep and two short beeps usually means a video problem. If you have an add-on video card, try replacing it with a new one. If you are using an on-board video, go into the bios and turn it off. then shut down & install an add-on card.
That usually means there is a disk in a drive somewhere either floppy or cd. Just remove them and restart.
However it could mean that there is hard drive trouble also. I would need more details on what you see on the screen to determine that.
Also, by saying that "it also makes a beeping noise until you hit a button" it could be a stuck key on the keyboard. If none of the steps correct the issue please reply back with as much detail as possible.
