Question about Dyson DC14 Bagless Upright Cyclonic Vacuum

1 Answer

I have a DC14 with a bad belt to the roller. How do I remove the clutch that operates the belt to turn the roller. I am holding the assembly that houses the clutch and all screws are out, it appears the red knob that engages the drive to operate the roller brush must be removed. Please advise and how. Thanks, John.......jtbritt@hotmail.com

You need a special tool to remove the clutch. Contact the Dyson Helpline so that they can refer you to an authorized Dyson dealer in your area who would have such a tool and who can fix it for you. The alternative is to purchase a tool and visit YouTube for instructions on removing it yourself...Google it, you should find the tool available for purchase.

The belt on my Dyson is making a terrible loud grinding sound after I removed the brush roller.

The sound is the clutch mechanism. That is a safety feature. It sounds like you have trapped the belt when you reinstalled it. If not, the brush roller bearings may be seized?
Take it apart again, spin the brush roller in your hand. Make sure it is free. When you reassemble it, before you refit the sole plate, turn the brush a few times with your fingers to make sure the belt finds its home on the roller. Only then refit the sole plate. Turn it again when fitted before you run it to make sure the brush is turning freely.
Then, make sure the clutch is engaged, see this article for more on clutches: DC14 clutch and brush roller

Brushes not moving

The DC14 has a "brush control system" operated by a knob on the right side of the base. This knob has two positions: "bare floors" (or "off") and "carpet" (or "auto"). The motor turns the roller only when the knob is on "carpet", and even then only when the handle is tilted back (with the base still flat on the floor). Make sure the knob is in the correct position.
Next possibility is that a belt has broken. The problem is that this system uses two belts, only one of which is easy to see. If you're sure that the control knob is in the correct position, and still the roller doesn't turn (although you can turn it freely by hand), then most likely a belt is broken. It's also possible that the clutch itself has failed.
Belt replacement on this model is not for the faint-hearted! To see what's involved, you can go to www.dysonmedic.com then scroll to the bottom of the page and click on "DC07 clutch replacement" (DC14 is similar). Then you have to decide who is to do the job!
I value your feedback, so please remember to rate this response. Good luck!

Dyson DC14 roller doesn't turn but everything else works. The belt is on correctly, the roller is clean and it turns manually so I can't figure out the problem.

It's a slightly different model, but the principle is the same. At least you will see how to remove the clutch cover so you can check on the other belt and confirm if this is the problem or not.

Dyson brush roller will not turn

Hi.

Your Dc14 will have A clutch unit.
Check that when you pull back handle to vacuum that the clutch control knob which is located front lower left side of machine moves to drive position & is not stuck in off or park position.
Rotate it to drive if its at off or park when you have lowered handle.

If adter checking this you still have no brush rotation you will need to remove clutch unit to either replace thr belts or fit new clutch.

Dyson DC07

Hi.

Depending on wether your machine has A clutch fitted will decide how easy this job will be.

The non clutched model is very simple turn the 3 plastic screws on sole plate to unlock position lift plate off remove belt from motor shaft & lift out brush roller.
Replace belt & roller fit sole plate & its done.

The clutched version will require the removing of the sole pate,
Then remove brush roller. & brush roller housing.
Then remove clutch cover,
Replace both belts & reassemble.

Its A lot to explain in great detail so try this site if your struggling.
