Question about Dryers

1 Answer

Dryer Shuts off

The dryer will run for about 10 minutes, then it will shutdown, i think it has to do with the thermal overloads, but I'm not sure. After the dryer cools down, you can restart the dryer with the same result.

Thanks
Mike

You're exactly right, Mike :)
It's the thermal overload on the motor itself. The motor needs to be replaced. there's 2 kinds of motors. the cheaper one runs about $60 and the other about $110. very simple to replace. make sure to but a new blower wheel because of how hard they are to take out, so you need to break it off. good luck :)

Frigidaire Affinity AEQ6700FSO electric dryer does not heat, then shuts off within 10 minutes.

Hello Scott Joseph Brandt - Since you have already replaced the thermal limiter check your breaker or fuses. Some dryers are run by two separate fuses, one for power and one for heat-ours is. If it is not the power source more than likely the issue lies with your heating coil.

Dryer runs for 10 mins and shuts off.

Your dryer motor has a thermal overload built in to it. If your symptom is shutting down allow to cool and it works again for a few minutes the shuts down again.

My dryer only runs for about 5 minutes then shuts off, as if overheated. You have to wait about 10 minutes before it will start when you push the button, only for it to last only another 5 minutes.

Sounds like you might be causing the thermal overload of the motor to open shutting down the dryer. Try cleaning out all the vents--external to the outside and internal to the dryer. Cleaning out the internal ones will require you to open the dryer up. Be sure the dryer is unplugged before any work is done to its internal workings or the control panel is accesseed. Often times, lint inside the vent or just inside the dryers internal areas can collect near the motor and overheat it. Cleaning this out may aleviate your problem. If this does not work, it may be time to look at a new motor--or dryer replacement. Usually when a motor starts to have internal electrical winding problems there will be a horrible sounding buzz upon start up. Remember, a thermally overloaded motor only has so many restarts before it is done.

Dryer shuts off after about 10 minutes. Motor feels hot, real hot. I think it is overheating and shutting off. The lower the setting the longer it will run. Is it the Thermal fuse or thermostat?

There might be a problem with the bushing of the dryer motor that causes the rotor to become shorted with the magnetic field and that's the reason why it becomes too hot. It is also the reason why the thermostat shuts off the motor when it becomes too hot to avoid overheating. Replace the bushing of your motor.

My dryer starts the first time with no problem, but after about an hour it starts to make a kind of buzzing sound. If I don't shut it off at this point it shuts itself off after another minute or two....

You are absolutely correct that the motor is the problem and needs to be replaced. The motor is overheating and its thermal overload protector trips off causing the dryer to shut down. Thermal overload protector resets and allows the motor to run again only when it has cooled down. It is the reason why the dryer is not turning on immediately after it shuts off. Replacing the motor will definitely solve the problem.

Changed thermal fuse and cleaned out drier. it ran good for about 20 minutes and then shut down again. what could be the problem

changing the thermal fuse was a good idea but if the dryer runs for 20 min. then shuts off that is generally the motor going into thermal overload....thus meaning you would need a new motor.

Whirlpool LER4634EQO Runs for about 2 minuts and shuts off.

It is possible your Cycling Themostat is not working properly. It determines at what temperature to turn heat on and off to maintain a consistent dryer temp. The High Limit Thermostat would turn off the heat but your dryer would still run. That leaves the Thermal Cut Off which is turning off your dryer. It might be faulty and turning off at too low a temp, or it might be doing it's job. In that case something else is wrong. If you can check the exhaust air temperature at the dryer, it should be under 175 degrees. If you are absolutely sure the vent is clear, then replace the Dryer Cycling Thermostat.

Dryer starts then shuts off

it seem like your motor could be faulty (overheating) causing the thermal overload to open, stopping the motor after awhile it will cool down and the thermal will reset, if this the case the bearings or the windings could be faulty

Hello, sounds like the rear drum rollers are in need of replacement which is causing the motor to get hot and cut out on the thermal cut out. It can be tricky to service if you not handy. Good Luck
