Toshiba tv model Cinema series HDTV Model# tn55x81

I just got this tv and it has a black bar across the bottom of the screen that keeps popping in and out. I have a friend that said he thinks its the projection lamp? Is that what it is and where can i find a new one?

Re: toshiba tv model Cinema series HDTV Model# tn55x81

My thought is that it's something with the closed captioning, fiddle with those settings in the menu, or with the devices like VCR or DVD if you're using something like that as a tuner.

It shouldn't be the convergence chips. You may have blown a pico fuse on the power board.
You should be able to safely remove the convergence IC's and try the tv without them as they only do image correction.

You could replace it yourself. I had it done recently and the local repair shop charge $400 to do it (including cost of the chip).

TN55X81 Rear Projection color separation - convergence problem

You shouldn't need to do a board replacement, all you should need to do is manually tune the convergence.

You can do this with the built-in user tool, but there's also a far more powerful set of options in the service mode. To save you the trouble (I advise doing a LOT of reading before attempting any of this) here's a solid set of various tutorials based on what form of "separation" you have occurring:
