Check the rear upper strut towers. These are notorious for rusting out, and causing the tire to hit the inner fender well. To my knowledge, no recall on this, but I've fixed a few with a rear quarter panel replacement from rock auto. You wouldn't notice it much on the rear of the vehicle. Smell the rear fender wells for burnt rubber odor.
It might seem fine but the burnt rubber smell means that the belt is slipping. This causes friction between the belt and the motor spindle causing the spindle to get extremely hot which melts the inner surface of the drive belt.
Take the belt off and examine the inner side that loops over the brushbar and the motor spindle. You will find that there are sections where the belt has partially melted - they are usually smoother than the rest of the belt.
Belts don't need to break before they need replacing. They just need to lose some tension. This is what seems to have happened in your case and you should replace your belt.
classical sign of a bad motor. the motor has a thermal switch on it telling the unit to shut off when it gets hot. after it cools down, the switch will tell the motor to turn back on again. good luck, i'm pretty sure that's your problem. contact me for further help if needed. thanks :)
It sounds like the blower motor has burnt up.(the one inside) The unit running for a few minutes then shutting off, is due to the high pressure/temperature safeties. When you removed the panels, did you notice any fan running?
