Question about Microsoft Xbox 360 Console
I already had this problem a few months ago so I had took my x-box apart and cleaned it and it has worked fine up until this point...now it's doing the same thing again so I have taken it apart and cleaned it again...but this time it will still read cd's and dvd's without any problems...but when I put ANY of my games in the machine will make scratching/grinding sounds (thats about as good as i can describe it) and it then brings me up to a white screen that says:
"To play this disk, put it into an xbox 360 console" (what you mean sticking it up bill gates *** wasn't the proper place for the disk?)
Do you think that I would need to buy a whole new drive or just pick up a new lense? or is there an easier fix for this?
If you have taken it apart, what version of the drive does it have? toshiba/samsung, hitachi, or benq?
reason i ask is, if it is no longer under warranty, it is possible to either replace the drive, or take the drive apart and clean the laser and lens assembly.
you can easily tell which drive you have by pressing the eject and looking at the disc tray.
the benq will have only the center truncated oval missing
the hitachi will have a round hole to the right of the center missing portion
the samsung will have a truncated oval center with odd edges near the center
once you id the drive, you should be able to pick up a replacement drive here.
the problem with this is you will need to mod the firmware for the drive with your original key from your old drive, thats why i would suggest doing it the more involved, but safer way...
grab a replacement lens assembly from here.

I hate to say it but your Optical drive is up the creek. I had this exact ploblem 3 times in 5 months, each needing a warranty repair. If your console is still under warranty contact Microsoft to get it repaired.
If you took out an extended warranty (and the X-Box 360 is the ONLY device where that actually makes sense) then time to use it.
If my advice was helpful please vote for me.
