I'm trying to recover a folder with some critical data that was damaged or corrupted, likely by a virus. Its a 10GB folder that contains Word, Excel, and PDF documents. None will open, and each report that the format of the file is invalid and/or does not match the extension. I tried free file repair tools online with no luck. I'm looking for the best tools or services, free or fee-based, that will give me the best chance of recovering at least some of this data.

There are many tools available online, but I suggest you try Stellar Windows Data Recovery software to recover your corrupted files (www.stellarinfo.co.in/software/windows-data-recovery-software.php). The software is 100% safe and secure and can recover all file types. You can download the free version of the software and check if it previews your files. If it works, then you have to buy the license version of the software which will be valid for one year.
For any reason, if the software does not work or you don't want to use the software, then you can approach data recovery service providers. Stellar also provides safe and secure data recovery services and can easily recover Corrupt Files - Word, Excel, and PDF.
The best tool to recover deleted files in Windows is Recuva. As, for the Mac version, the best way to recover deleted word or excel files is using Disk Drill. More info:

Just in case anyone finds their way here by Google, as I did looking for how to find the Office 2016 autosave files...
You can locate them by going clicking the Go menu in the Finder, choosing Go To Folder and pasting:
~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.Word/Data/Library/Preferences/AutoRecovery/
in the box.
You may need to rename any files you find there as .doc instead of .docx if they won't open properly.
Maybe you can try uFlysoft Data Recovery for Mac, it can recover LOST DATA on Mac only in three steps:
Step 1. Launch the software to scan the device where your files deleted
Step 2: Preview the scan result files and make mark if it is the one you find

You can use the Place command to place one document into another. But the placed document is not editable. This may help for a few pages. But overall I believe the only real option is to rebuild the file. Read more:https://onlinefilerepair.com/en/pdf-repair-online.html
