In order to change the transmission oil in this vehicle without a vacuum you need to remove the upper transmission line that runs into the radiator. Then attach about 3ft of 1/2 ID plastic tube (from any hardware store) to that line and into a 5 gallon bucket or other container. Start the engine and shut it off as soon as you see bubbles (may need two people for this) Then you add fresh oil to replace the amount of old oil and do this method till it runs out clean. (Takes around 12 quarts to complete) Be sure to make sure you are not letting the transmission dry! Permanent damage may result from this.Running this dry comes to a matter of second! This is why I suggest using two people, one to watch and one to run the key.
Another method I have used is the drain and fill method. The drain plug on the bottom of the transmission yields 4 quarts and if you drain that and then fill it with fresh, run the car a bit (maybe to work and back) then do it again. Eventually around the third or forth change the fluid should be clean. This method takes longer but it much safer for the transmission.

Park the car on a level surface with the engine idling . Slowly move the gear selector lever through all the shift positions and then to position P. Wait 3 minutes before checking the oil level. As the illustration shows, the dipstick has a COLD and a HOT side. The oil level should between the MIN and MAX marks. Wipe the dipstick with a clean cloth.
WARNING! The oil may be very hot.
Do not use rags that could leave lint on the dipstick. The transmission is topped up via the dipstick tube. The space between the MIN and MAX marks on the dipstick corresponds to 0.5 US qt. (0.5 liter). Do not fill the transmission with too much oil, since this can result in oil being ejected from the transmission. Too little oil, on the other hand, can negatively affect transmission operation, particularly in very cold weather.
A Cold transmission: oil temperature 105° F (40° C). This is a normal temperature for the transmission after idling for about 10 minutes. At oil temperatures below 105° F (40° C), the level may be below the MIN mark. B Warm transmission: oil temperature 169° F (80° C). This temperature after driving for about 30 minutes. At oil temperatures above 190° F (90° C), the level may be above the MAX mark.
A typical automobile holds 4-5 quarts of oil.....Depends on the size of motor. If changing yourself, Drain out all oil, change filter, put oil plug back in. Put 3- 31/2 quarts back into car. put oil cap on and start car. Let run for 2-3 minutes then shut back off. Wait for a few. Pull out dipstick wipe, put back in then pull out a second time...Now you know how much you need to top off level.
With a filter change along with the changing of oil. I would start with four quarts, than start the engine let it run for a second. After that turn it of check the oil, and top off as necessary. Roughly guessing I would say it holds about 4 1/4 quarts. Or could take up to five, its safe to start engine after four quarts. BE SURE to start engine after four quarts for 10-20 seconds, and then turn off to recheck. Too much oil can be catastrophic. (if no oil is showing on the dipstick than it is more than one quart low. The lowest point on dipstick represents one quart low, the middle is half a quart, and full is full) :)

CAPACITIES:
Engine, with filter..........3.5 liter To prevent overfilling during oil changes, add 0.5 liter (0.5 quart) less than capacity shown, start engine, let run until engine operating temperature is approx. 60 °C (140 °F) , switch engine off, wait 3 minutes, check dipstick, fill to full mark as indicated on dipstick (may be more or less than 0.5 liter (0.5 quart) depending on model).
As for the sludge question, I add Marvel Mystery Oil around 600 miles before i do my oil change. This will clean out the oil pick up screen and oil journals through out the engine, I do this on every oil change and i have over 356,000 miles on my engine. Oil and filter changed every 3,000 miles intervals. Good luck and hope this helps.
Hi, I have a 1996 Volvo wagon 850 turbo. I just bought it and when you hold the rpm's at 3 and a half it was blowing out smoke after about 600 miles it stoped smelling like burning oil and doesn't blow out any smoke. But I use a court of oil in about every 150 miles. What could this be?
Thank's Jodie
Are you sure you put in the required amount? Sometimes 1 quart can make a difference. No offence intended cause in my early years , I won't admit anything. Only thing I can think of is all yhe oil hasn't drained down yet or the clean oil is hard to see. when you pull the dipstick out, Lay the tip on a paper towel or on your hand to transfer the oil and tell where it is. Good Luck and you are not going crazy, ot's there.
