Thin vertical lines top to bottom. is it power supply or main board

The main power supply regulator section circuit fault. Either it will be a separate board, or the part of main board. It will be best to replace the power supply regulator board as card basis rather than making "Surgery" to it; which usually will make loss for both money and time. Even though you can make it right, it will cost around an amount equal to the cost of a new board; including the cost of (spare parts + service charge) More to say, most of the spare parts to it will be difficult to get from open electronic spare part market. This is true to most of the flat panel TV power supply boards; irrespective of its brand and screen size..

Let me start at the beginning---Likely a bad main board in your case but nothing is sure in this type of set.

Main board controls all information to the front screen and communicates to various boards---There really is almost never a simple "that part is bad solution" as any board, the power supply, the main, etc can cause issues.

It can even be a issue with the front screen unit--called a display panel.

You might consider doing some research on the set by Google of the model number with "parts" to get an idea what is available and what potential parts cost might be.

If a main board is bad it will average from one to two hundred just for the part----if issue is the panel you are done--part if even available is more than set cost when new.

This is a plasma TV to which there are driver boards Top/Bottom, Left and Right.
Sounds like some of the driver main transistors have gone bad.
Wondering how old the TV is?
Honestly may be best to search for a new TV. Sorry to break this to you but its the law of supply and demand and there is such a glutton of TV's, Plasmas, LCD and LED tvs out there.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. As a tech I hate telling you this. I don't make the money fixing these older units. Cheaper to go out and by new with a warranty!

You are seeing vertical retrace lines. This faut is due to the vertical output section inside your TV. To rectify this fault, you must open your Tv. Just open it after unpluging it from the wall power socket. Locate the vertical output section on the printed circuit board.
It is easy to locate. You can see four wires goes from the deflection yoke; the coil fitted around the neck of the picture tube. Out of which two of them will be thick, usually red and blue coloured, and the other two will be thin. These two thin wires are for vertcal scanning. Just follow these two thin wires, and you will reach a point where these four wires are pluged onto the main circuit board, very near to the LOT. Upside down the printed circuit board, and follow the print of that two thin wires, and you will reach to the vertical output section of your Tv.
Before doing anything, just look for any loose soldering or bad solderings there. It is very difficult to find out loose solderings, as thay will be microscopic, I advice you to resolder most of the soldering points there by applying a little more solder; without making any solder short. Resolder all the pins of the vertical output IC, and see the effect.
If this does not help, replace the two or three electrolytic capacitors, at about 1000MF to 2200MFD there, with same capacity and voltage ratings. Make sure about their polarity, as electrolytic capacitors have both positive and negative terminals like torch cells. Note the polarity when resoldering them out of the board. This must solve ypur problem.

Philips 50 inch plasma tv no video but has sound

That TV uses the PTK195 chassis, and the fact that you see only a thin line for each color near the bottom of the screen tells me your vertical output IC has stopped working, and is putting a small DC voltage across the yokes. I have seen this caused by a defective vertical output IC and I have also seen vertical problems caused by a small CRT coolant leak which drips onto the main board near the vertical output IC. If you do not have experience servicing the PTK195 chassis than have a qualified tech handle it for you.
