Question about Kenmore 3.2 cu. ft. Plus Top Load Washer

1 Answer

I have a Kenmore heavy duty 90 series super capicity plus. Recently repaired the motor coupling myself with great success. Now the machine stops in mid agitation cycle and just sits for hours. When i advance the knob it will start again but no matter the cycle when it gets to spin it will stop again. With tinkering and pulling and pushing and resetting it may finally drain and spin. Finally after approx 1 week of this, it stopped draining and spinning. Agitation works fine, no drain and no spin. Please suggest how I might fix this problem

Thank you Benjamin. I am running out to sears now and will ask them for the lid switch. May I keep this communication open with you until I know I have fixed the problem? It will likely be Monday or Tuesday before I get back to you with the result of the lid switch. Thanks. Joe

Even though the lid is closed, its possible the lid switch is defective or has come loose. With washer off and lid up, take a pen & push it down in the hole where the tab from the lid would go down through when closed. You should hear a slight click when you push the pen down into the switch & another click when you pull the pen out. If switch is bad or has come off, the washer will not spin or pump the water out.

The lid switch is most likely the problem and is relatively cheap and simple to replace, you can get a new one from the sears website or through a local sears store. The less likely problem would be that the timer itself (the dial that spins through the cycles) is bad, check the switch first and let me know what you find.

I have kenmore 80 series heavy duty/ super capacity plus washer that after it fills with water, hot or cold and it starts the wash cycle, I noticed that the agitator only moves once in awhile and stops

hum either a bad timer sticking the point contacts close. have u tried this in all cycles? and possibly a motor with bad windings not enough power to run agitation? try running in mild or gentle and see what happens? I was tempted to say the cam dogs in agitator but they dont work then stop then work, when they go out they go out.

If drain hose is connected to a standpipe check that it's inserted no more than 4". You may be getting a syphoning situation that is allowing gray water to contaminate clean clothes.

Kenmore 90 Series fills with water but would not agitate or spin

You have a problem with the motor coupling. Top-load washers use what's called a direct-drive system, meaning it does not use a belt but what's called a "motor coupling". I probably replace 5 a week because these little guys break because of 2 reasons that i've found.
1) The break mechanism is too dry and causing the basket to stop at a holt, which puts a lot of strain on the coupler.

2) They break because of over-loading. I don't think you're over-loading though because it was find for 5 straight years.

Good luck to you. The repair is kind of hard to do on your own for the first time, so I would call an authorized technician. It will run you anywhere between $90 to $120 at most.

Best of luck!

as with basic spin faults -a number of reasons usually 1 motor brushes, 2 motor 3 motor control pcb or the obvious one - the belt has come off.

If it drains and won't spin you have to replace the direct drive coupling.

Kenmore 90 plus series: heavy duty super capacity won't agitate

this is the site to find out how to fix your washer.
you have a broken drive coupling.
it probably wont agitate or spin, but will fill and drain.
you need to remove 2 screws from the control panel, hinge it back and then remove the 2 brass colored clips that hold the cabinet to the base. once you do then pull the entire cabinet forwards to a 45 degree angle and pull it off the base.
then pull the 2 clips off pump and then 2 more on the motor. that will allow you to get to the drive coupling. you will find it to be broken.
replace it with part number 285753a for about 15-20 bucks.
