Question about KitchenAid Refrigerators

Open Question

We have a K.A. KTRS22K refrigerator, top freezer. Just recently the stuff in the refrigerator spoiled. There was a large amount of frost in the freezer, and after unloading the refrigerator to let it defrost open to the 75 degree garage I removed the 1 shelf in the freezer and the bottom pan. Ice still in there after 5 hours. Question, suspect bad defrost timer? I blew out the condenser with the air compressor. The garage ambient could hit 80 but no more. The gaskets on the freezer door are not cracked, but you can hear a small whistle after closing the freezer door.

SOURCE: Heavy frost in freezer, warm refer compartment.

Hi, With the information you supplied i'm going to assume there is an ice build up at the rear of the freezer. Your problem is going to be with your defrost system. I will also assume you have the ability to repair this yourself. This is going to be one of three problems with your refridgerator, 1st thing to do is remove shelfs and panel in the back of the freezer...you should see ice build up on the evaporator...don't worry get a hair dryer and melt the ice. Next locate the wires for the heater...using a multi meter test the heater for condinuity...if the heater is bad replace it, If the heater is good replace the defrost thermostat..the stat normally is a barrel looking part clipped onto the evaporator pipe. The last possible problem could be the evaporator fan, have you heard the fan running in the past few hours?..if you are not sure pull the panel out to where you can see fan and watch it over an hour to see if it turns. I have included links with pictures of what the parts you need to check are: http://romulusappliance.com/manufacturers/maytag/refrigerators/575432.JPG defrost stat http://www.hotekalliance.com/UploadFiles/2008627111553382.jpg heaters http://www.applianceblog.com/archives/EvapMotor1018185.jpg evap fan. Hope this helps. If you have any other questions please feel free to comment again. If you decide to get a repair guy in should not cost you any more then $120 - $200 depending on make/model/problem Good luck!

Sorry to read about your problem, I hope this helps you out.

if you have a lite frost build up and not large amounts of ice, on your freezer coils, you may have low freon, in your unit..if you have the large amount of Ice, you may have a defrost issue.

The only thing you can do, to help correct the problems. is clean all outside coils, below or on the back of the fridge. vacuum and compressed air to clean them. and see if that helps the issue.

I tried to help you. Please help me and Rate/Vote on my response. We take the time to answer your question's. take the time to rate us.Thanks and good luck

It sounds like the unit may be "frosted-up" or the circulating fan has stopped running. (regardless of the frost-free system). I have had to take them apart, (the inside rear wall) and defrost behind there. Push the button on the door switches and see if the fans start to run. If they don't start blowing or make squealing noise then you need a new fan(s). So a service call may be in your future unless you want to dive in with a hair dryer and tools. In any case, enjoy eating everything before it spoils.

Freezer wrk OK but temperature in the bottom fridge not cold

If you have a frost build up on the interior back wall of the freezer, you have a defrost issue. This would include a bad defrost control, bad heater or terminator.
If there is not a frost build up then you may have a bad evaporator fan motor.

Icemaker making too much ice & Freezer frosting up.

Hi gpss,
It sounds like you are getting large amounts of warm moist air into the freezer. This can be caused by the door being left cracked open or the door seal not sealing properly. Check your door gaskets on both sides of the refrigerator. One other possible is the ice chute. If it is not closing all the way it will cause the same problem. You will get alot of frost forming in the freezer then it will melt when the refrigerator defrosts. Let me know if this helps, and if you have anymore questions.

Refrigerator is actually an ARB2217 with warm refrigerator/cold freezer

I had a Freezer... recommend to change the coils or make another tubing that would replace the leaking area, then to replace the freon or coolant... then they have to make sure that they would place in the right amount of coolant or else the freezer won't work perfectly.

The refrigerator/freezer isn't cold anymore. The light is one. The icemaker is still running, but no ice. The refrig. side started to go first, then the freezer side about 5 days later. Now it just blows...

Remove back wall cover from freezer compartment. Should have a nice even frost pattern. If large amount off ice buildup is on evaporater than air can not flow through entire unit correctly. This means that unit is not defrosting properly. Check continuity on defrost heater, if good replace defrost thermostat, located as a clipped on device at top of evaporater.

Ice build up in back section of a Whirlpool no frost top freezer refrigerator 66"hx30"wx27"d

your sure the defrost cycle works? sounds to me its not. you need to remove the freezer back and check the defrost components. or put it in the defrost cycle and see if it is working. to get that much frost as you describe the dor would have to be left open. also check all door seals. let me know what you find and we can go from there
