If you suspect you have a defective timer it can easily be replaced by performing the following steps:

1. Unplug washing machine... and pull out the timer knob. Some knobs have a removeable center cap and hidden screw. Some are simply slip-fit. Remove the knob.

2. Remove console. This can be accomplished in one of two ways depending on which type of console you have.

a. If the console has removable end caps, the caps lift off by prying on the top from the back of the washer.
The cap will pull off towards you as you are facing the unit from the front of the washer.
There will be a screw under each end cap that you will need to remove.

b. If the console does not have removable end caps, you will need to slide a putty knife under the front corner of each side and push in while lifting up.
There is a retaining clip under each side that has to be released.

3. Once the console has been released it will lift up and fold back over the back of the washer in its resting position. Use care not to stress the small plastic hinges that hold it on. They can break easily.

4. Disconnect all power plugs and remove the timer's mounting screws.

5. Reinstall reverse of removal.

Disconnect the power. There are two clips to release, one at each front corner of the control console. Use a putty knife, push it between the machine top and the console in from the corner about 3/4". Push firmly but carefully. you will feel the clip pressure. Push slightly and it will release and the corner of the console will be free to lift slightly. Repeat at the other corner. With both clips released you can roll the console over the back to have working room to change the timer. The timer control knob has to be released from the back side of the timer. Look in the center of the timer from the back side and you will see that the stem on the timer switch is held in a groove by the timer case. Release the stem from the timer case and pull out to the front.

Disconect the power. There are two clips to release, one at each front corner of the control panel. My favorite tool to remove the panel is a putty knife. Push the putty knife between the machine top and the control panel at either front corner. You will feel the spring steel clip compress as you push toward the back of the machine. Push with a little force and the corner of the control panel wil lift easily when the clip releases. Repeat at the other corner and the control panel should roll over the back of the machine. The front control knob needs to be released before the timer will be removeable. Look carefully at the center of the back of the timer and you will see the stem of the control knob. You will Need to carefully separate the two halves of the retainer to release the knob. I hope this is helpful. Good luck.

Do i need to power down to change the back up battery

If this is ordinary residential timer, you can replace battery without changing anything.
Just replace battery.
Most timers will hold some or part of the memory during battery changeover... frequently losing no programming if battery change is done quickly, and battery was not completely depleted, and timer is still functional.
If timer function is not restored after battery change, reset timer fully and then reprogram.
If battery change and reset does not work, then timer is probably gone bad.
Most modern timers have reset button, but some require a 2-button sequence to reset.
Other modern timers have a 'battery' but the battery is built into the circuit board and thus not replaceable ... it is rechargeable, like a capacitor ... but when it fails .. the timer needs to be replaced.
Timers with replaceable batteries are generally not functional after exposure to freezing temperatures for several day, but the non-replaceable type generally have wider tolerance for temperature variation.

Replace backup battery

Posted under orbit timers... product not identified
Many timers today have a backup 'battery' that is actually a capacitor located on the circuit board.
Generally the battery is not replaceable and is specific to the circuit board design and model of product.
Product manuals and manufacturers call it a battery because it works like a battery to preserve settings during brief power outage.

If the timer has a replaceable battery, then there will be a small door located somewhere on timer that can usually be popped open using thumb or small tool.

There are some timers that have a replaceable battery... this applies to wall timers, box timers, timer modules, and sprinkler timers etc... and this is very useful for some applications because the timer can operate loads independent of using voltage.
Disadvantage of replaceable battery is failure due to cold weather or bad battery connection. Advantage of capacitor-type battery is low cost and high reliability.

Digital display stopped working electronic timer

Identify timer.
Replace battery.
Do not use battery-operated timer in cold environment... look for temperature range when selecting timer.
Mechanical timers will work in cold temps.
Or buy another timer to replace defective timer

How do I charge timex digital timer 12/874

Copy following link to identify timer and download possible manual:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Woods-timers-and-manuals.html#Timex

2) Usually you plug timer into outlet for 1/2 hour to charge internal non-replaceable battery. Other timers have replaceable battery. Always reset timer before programming. If timer display does not show with charged, or new, battery, then try timer on different outlet, and/or replace timer.
3) If timer does not show on link above, add comment and include photo or clear description of timer.

Why is my timer runnung backwards

Timer is not identified.
Analog timers have clock motor.
If the gears strip out, then timer can run backwards.
Some timers have replaceable clock motors, such as Intermatic and Tork box timers, and pool timers.

While small plug in timers generally do not have replacement parts.

I have an Aube 3 way wall switch timer that has failed. I have another timer (utilitech in-wall timer) that has a black, red, white and ground wire. Not sure how to wire it.

Utilitec can only replace single-pole switch.
Open following link for typical Utilitec single-pole wiring:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Program-wire-Utilitec-LW60419.html

Aube timer has internal battery that runs clock mechanism and does not require neutral wire.
The Aube battery lets timer replace single-pole or 3-way switch.
Utilitec timer does not have battery, so clock mechanism requires neutral wire, just like plugging in electric clock.
Without battery, timers like Utilitec can only replace single-pole switch.

Open following link to see list of timers that can be used for 3-way:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Aube-timers.html#3-way

When installing 3-way timer, the timer replaces one 3-way switch but other 3-way switch remains.
The remaining 3-way is rewired to accommodate the specific timer being used.
SOME brands of timer cannot replace either 3-way switch, but instead can only replace the 3-way that receives hot wire from breaker: Read manual before selecting timer.

Note: Battery-operated timers can be used for 3-way application, but cannot operate in cold environment.

Is the Woods 59028 Programmable Timer Switch Light Almond a 3 way switch?

Woods 59208 is single-pole timer.

Open following link to see list of timers used for 3-way application:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Woods-timers-and-manuals.html#59028

When replacing 3-way switch, some timers can replace either switch. For example Aube and GE.
Other timers can only replace switch that receives power from breaker. For example Intermatic.

The timer replaces only 1 of the 3-way switches.
The other 3-way switch remains.
But in all cases, the remaining 3-way switch has to be rewired to accommodate the timer.
3-way timers cannot replace 3-way switch wire-for-wire.
3-way timers mimic 3-way operation. When 2 of the timer wires are connected, the timer reverses programming. When those two wires are disconnected, the timer programming resumes. So off becomes on, and on becomes off.
The remaining 3-way switch has to be rewired so that switch connects and disconnects the two timer wires that mimic 3-way operation.

How do you wire a digital in-wall timer to a 3-way circuit?

First, the timer has to rated for 3-way application.
Not every timer works for 3-way.
Open following link for some timers that work for 3-way application.
http://waterheatertimer.org/GE-timers-and-manuals.html#15071

Next thing is to read instruction manual carefully.
Since 3-way switches come in pairs, the timer replaces one of the switches, and then the other switch remains.
Some timers can replace either switch, and some timers can only replace the switch that receives hot from breaker.
In all cases, the remaining 3-way switch must be rewired to accommodate how the timer works.

My hotpoint condenser dryer keeps tripping the trip switch

Replace the switch, or the whole control/timer assembly.

If it keeps giving you troubles after replacement, you will need to check the electronic control module (small box) inside the appliance.

Insert model number here to get schematics and replacement parts.
