Question about Dyson DC59 Animal Bagless Cordless Stick Vacuum

My dyson keeps cutting out. It's like a pulse noise and works intermittently.

I've washed the filter, bought a new filter, checked the charger. If I take the filter out it works constantly, but when I put it back in it works intermittently again.

    This solved my problem, great and thanks. The bin inlet door was jammed, so I just pushed it from the outside, freed it up, and now the motor runs continously.

    I had the same problem cleaned it all and it was still doing it, then I discovered there is a small flap inside the unit where the pole part connects to the vacuum that was stuck, I gently pushed it with my finger it came unstuck, connected the pole and its started working perfectly again.

    of well proud of myself at 80 and watched the video to take the brush apart and it was clogged Cleared it and it works fine Love it one of the best things I’ve bought

I would suggest that this is a blockage of some kind as the pulsating is caused by a lack of airflow (the motor is protecting itself by pulsating and then ultimately cutting out).

I would recommend looking at the following video which will take you through a methodical way of checking this. The model in the video is a DC59 but applies to most cordless models:

Furthermore, I would check the bin inlet to make sure that the one-way door/flap is not jammed as this also can cause the problem.

    brilliant....not only do i now have a sparkling clean dyson from all the other tips i followed, it now fully functions thanks to that "try the bin inlet" tip: as simple as that!

Dyson cordless vacuum are engineered to make a pulsing noise, then to shut off for protection, if something is preventing airflow from passing through the machine. If this is occurring, it's likely there's a blockage somewhere in the floor tool, wand or bin inlet. It's also a good idea to check the bin inlet flap can open and close freely, and isn't jammed in place by debris.

We recommend washing the lifetime pre-filter at least once a month using cold water without detergent, so please give this a try if the filter hasn't been washed recently.

DC59's motor will make a rapid pulsing noise to warn you if something is stopping airflow from passing through the machine. The motor will then shut off for protection.

This should be quick and easy to resolve by checking the motorised floor tool, wand and bin inlet for blockages. It's also a good idea to give the washable pre-filter a rinse in cold water if this hasn't been done recently - we recommend washing it at least once a month. Make sure the filter is allowed to dry completely for at least 24 hours before replacing it.

My dyson doc 62 goes off and on intermittently. How to solve this

DC62 will pulse if something is preventing airflow from moving the machine. The vacuum will then shut itself down for protection.

My vacuum was making a funny noise and had a bad smell

Most Dyson vacuums include a thermal cutout which shuts the machine down for protection if it starts to overhead. You should find it will run again after it's cooled down for around 2 hours.

This is likely to have been caused by a blockage, or because the filter is overdue for a wash. The valve you've described is the suction relief valve. This will open when something is restricting airflow through the vacuum cleaner.

In normal use, we recommend washing both filters at least once a month, as shown in the video above. Use cold water without detergent, and allow at least 24 hours for both filters to dry completely somewhere warm before replacing them in the machine.

My dyson d14 animal keeps cutting in and out. When it's on, the hole above where the filter is, keeps making a loud suction noise and it won't clean up hair and dirt.


Vacuum Cleaners require AIr-Flow. Your machine is not getting any air-flow. The noise you hear is a valve opening up to prevent your machine from overheating and burning out the motor.
You probably have an obstruction somewhere in the machine. Dysons are kind of known for that in the vacuum cleaner world.
Check all air channels and clean them out. If that fixes the problem you still might have issues that caused it to clog up.

I posted the part second because it takes 24 hours to complete it.
Be sure you wash your Washable Pre-filter. It needs to dry for 24 hours. Never put it back in the machine wet.

Once it is completely dry reinstall the pre-filter and your machine should be back to normal operating functions.
