  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove the drive belts. Remove the timing belt covers and the timing belt.
  4. Remove the water pump mounting bolts.
  5. Separate the water pump from the water inlet pipe and remove the water pump.
  6. Inspect the water pump and replace as necessary.

To install:
  1. Clean all gasket and O-ring surfaces on the water pump and water pipe inlet tube.
  2. Wet a new O-ring with water and install it on the water inlet pipe.
  3. Install a new gasket on the water pump.

  1. Install the pump inlet opening over the water pipe and press until the pipe is completely inserted into the pump housing.
  2. Install the water pump-to-block mounting bolts and tighten to 20 ft. lbs.
  3. Install the timing belt and timing belt covers. Install and adjust the drive belts.
  4. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Fill the cooling system to the proper level with a 50 / 50 mixture of clean, ethylene glycol antifreeze and water.
  5. Run the engine and check for leaks. Top off the coolant level, if necessary.

Replacing a water pump


The instructions below should apply for your car. There are different engines for that model but the instructions are basically the same.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove the serpentine belt. Removal of the alternator and/or bracket may help give more room for easier access.
  4. Remove water pump attaching bolts and nut, then remove pump.

To install:

  1. Clean the sealing surfaces, then place a 3/32 in. (2mm) bead of RTV sealant or equivalent on the water pump sealing surface.
  2. Coat the bolt threads with a pipe sealant GM part no. 1052080 or equivalent.
  3. Install the water pump, then tighten the bolts to 10-24 ft. lbs. (14-33 Nm).
  4. Connect the negative battery cable.
  5. Fill the cooling system, then check for leaks. Start the engine and allow to come to normal operating temperature. Recheck for leaks, then top off the coolant.

How to replace the water pump


Water Pump
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
CAUTION
Never open, service or drain the radiator or
cooling system when hot; serious burns can occur from the steam and hot coolant.
Also, when draining engine coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are
attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze and could drink any that is left in an
uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in
sufficient quantities. Always drain coolant into a sealable container. Coolant
should be reused unless it is contaminated or is several years old.

2S-ELC Engines

  1. Drain the cooling system.
  2. Remove the timing belt as described in this section.
  3. Remove the alternator adjusting bar.
  4. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the water inlet housing.

  5. Disconnect the water temperature switch from the water inlet housing.
  6. Disconnect the water by-pass hose from the water pump.
  7. Remove the two heater pipe clamp bolt. Remove the two nuts and heater pipe
    with gasket. Replace the gasket.
  8. Loosen the three water pump mounting bolts in the indicated sequence.

  9. Remove the water pump and O-ring. If the water pump is stubborn, tap it a
    few times with a rubber mallet.
  10. Installation is the reverse of removal. Make sure all the water pump and
    engine contact surfaces are clean and install the new O-ring into the pump cover
    groove.
  11. Install the water pump with the three bolts. Tighten the bolts in sequence
    to 82 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  12. Fill the cooling system to the proper level with a good brand of ethylene
    glycol based coolant. Start the engine and inspect for leaks.

3S-FE Engines

  1. Drain the cooling system.
  2. Disconnect the water temperature switch connector from the water inlet
    housing.
  3. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the water inlet housing.
  4. Remove the timing belt and timing belt pulleys as described in this section.

  5. Remove the two nuts attaching the water by-pass pipe to the water pump
    cover.
  6. Remove the three water pump-to-engine attaching bolts.
  7. Pull the water pump and the water pump cover out from the engine.
  8. Remove the two O-rings and gasket. Discard them and replace with new.
  9. Installation is the reverse of removal. Secure the water pump onto the
    engine and install the three bolts. Tighten the bolts in an alternate pattern to
    82 inch lbs. (9 Nm). Install the by-pass pipe attaching nuts and tighten them to
    82 inch lbs. (9 Nm) also.
  10. Fill the cooling system to the proper level with coolant.
  11. Start the engine and check for leaks.

5S-FE Engine

  1. Drain the engine coolant.
  2. Remove the timing belt.
  3. Remove the No. 1 idler pulley and tension spring. Remove the No. 2 idler
    pulley.
  4. Disconnect the lower radiator hose at the water inlet.
  5. Remove the alternator belt adjusting bar.
  6. Loosen the two nuts and disconnect the water by-pass pipe.
  7. Remove the three pump mounting bolts in sequence (middle, top, bottom) and
    then pull out the water pump and cover. Remove the gasket and two O-rings.

    To install:

  8. Replace the two O-rings and gasket with new ones, coat the by-pass O-ring
    with soapy water and then connect the pump cover to the by-pass pipe. Do not
    install the nuts yet!
  9. With the pump loosely connected to the pipe, install the pump and tighten
    the three bolts to 82 inch lbs. (9 Nm), in sequence (top, bottom, middle).
    Install the two by-pass pipe nuts and tighten them to 78 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  10. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten each
    component to specifications.

2VZ-FE and 3VZ-FE Engines

  1. Drain the engine coolant.
  2. Disconnect the lower radiator hose at the water inlet.
  3. Disconnect the timing belt from the water pump pulley.
  4. Remove the bolt holding the inlet pipe to the alternator belt adjusting bar
    and then remove the inlet pipe and O-ring.
  5. Remove the water inlet and thermostat.
  6. Remove the seven bolts and then pry off the water pump.
    To install:

  7. Scrape any remaining gasket material off the pump mating surface. Apply a
    0.08-0.12 inch (2-3mm) bead of sealant to the groove in the pump and then
    install the pump. Tighten the bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).

  8. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten each
    component to specifications. Connect the radiator hose and fill the engine with
    coolant.

1MZ-FE Engine

  1. Drain the engine coolant.
  2. Remove the timing belt.
  3. Mark the left and right camshaft pulleys with a touch of paint. Using a
    spanner wrench, remove the bolts to the right and left camshaft pulleys.
    Separate the pulleys from the engine. Be sure not to mix up the pulleys.
  4. Remove the No. 2 idler pulley by removing the bolt.
  5. Disconnect the three clamps and engine wire from the rear timing belt cover.

  6. Remove the six bolts holding the No. 3 timing belt cover to the engine
    block.

  7. Remove the bolts and nuts to the extract the water pump.

  8. Raise the engine slightly and remove the water pump and the gasket from the
    engine.

    To install:

  9. Check that the water pump turns smoothly. Also check the air hole for
    coolant leakage.
  10. Using a new gasket, apply liquid sealer to the gasket, water pump and engine
    block.
  11. Install the gasket and pump to the engine and install the four bolts and two
    nuts. Tighten the nuts and bolts to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
  12. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten each
    component to specifications.

    • Rear timing belt cover - 74 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
    • No. 2 idler pulley - 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm)

  13. Fill the engine coolant. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery
    and start the engine.
  14. Top off the engine coolant and check for leaks.

Removal & Installation 2.2L VIN 4 To Remove:
  1. Drain the cooling system.
  2. Remove the lower radiator hose from thermostat housing.
  3. Remove the thermostat housing bolts and outlet.
  4. Remove the thermostat.
  5. Clean the mating surfaces.
To Install:
  1. Install the thermostat.
  2. Install the thermostat housing and bolts.
  3. Install the coolant housing bolts. Tighten bolts to 14 Nm (10 ft. lbs.).
  4. Install the lower radiator hose to thermostat housing.
  5. Fill the cooling system.
  6. Inspect for leaks.
2.2L VIN F To Remove:
  1. Remove the exhaust manifold. If equipped with an automatic transmission.
  2. Drain the cooling system.

  5. Install the right engine splash shield.
  6. Install the wheel.
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8. Install the exhaust manifold heat shield and bolt.
  9. Tighten the exhaust manifold heat shield bolts to 14 Nm (10 ft. lbs.).
  10. Fill the cooling system.
  11. Inspect the system for leaks.

Removal & Installation 2.2L Engine To Remove:
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2. If equipped with an automatic transmission, remove the exhaust manifold..
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Right front wheel and tire assembly.
    • Right front fender liner. chevy_cav_02-04_accescover.gif

    • Access plate on the water pump sprocket from the timing cover.
  6. Install J 43651 water pump sprocket holder or equivalent to the water pump sprocket.
  7. Use the access plate bolts to attach J43651 to the engine front cover.
  8. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Bolts that secure the sprocket to the water pump.
    • Bolt that secures the engine block to the water pump.
    • Bolt that secures the engine front cover to the water pump.
    • Feed pipe that joins the thermostat housing to the water pump. chevy_cav_02-04_wp.gif

    • 2 Bolts that secure the water pump to the engine block.
    • Water pump.
To Install:
  1. Use a threaded stud in the hub to align the water pump sprocket.
  2. Install or connect the following:
    • Water pump.
    • 2 bolts that secure the water pump to the engine block.
    • Feed pipe that joins the thermostat housing to the water pump.
    • Front cover bolt and the bolt that secures the engine block to the water pump. Tighten the bolts to 15 ft lbs (20 Nm).
    • 2 of the bolts that secure the water pump sprocket to the water pump.
  3. Remove the threaded stud.
  4. Install the last bolt.
    • Tighten the bolts to 89 in lbs (10 Nm).
  5. Remove J 43651.
  6. Install the access plate on the water pump sprocket to the timing cover.
  7. Install the access plate bolts.
    • Tighten the bolts to 18 in lbs (10 Nm).
  8. Install the front fender liner.
  9. Install the right front tire and wheel.
  10. If equipped with an automatic transmission, install the exhaust manifold.
  11. Fill the cooling system.
  12. Connect the battery ground cable.
2.4L Engine To Remove:

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable
  2. Drain the engine coolant.
  3. Remove the exhaust manifold.
  4. Remove the coolant intake pipe as follows:
    1. Remove the coolant inlet pipe bolts.
    2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
    3. Remove the engine splash shield.
    4. Remove the bolts from the transaxle-to-engine block brace and remove the brace.
    5. Remove the radiator hose from the coolant inlet pipe.
    6. Remove the coolant inlet pipe to oil pan bolt.
    7. Remove the coolant inlet pipe, thermostat and seal.
  5. Lower the vehicle.
  6. Disconnect the heater hose quick connect from the heater outlet pipe.
  7. Remove the front timing chain cover and the chain tensioner.
  8. Unfasten the water pump-to-cylinder block bolts.
  9. Remove the water pump-to-timing chain housing nuts.
  10. Remove the water pump and cover mounting bolts and nuts.
  11. Remove the water pump and cover as an assembly. Separate the two pieces after removal.
  12. Clean the mating surfaces.
To Install:
  1. Install the water pump cover to the water pump assembly.
  2. Install and hand tighten the pump cover mounting bolts.
  3. Install water pump cover assembly.
  4. Install and hand tighten the cover-to-block mounting bolts.
  5. Install and hand tighten the water pump-to-timing chain housing nuts.
    • Tighten the water pump-to-timing chain housing mounting nuts to 19 ft lb (26 Nm).
    • Tighten the water pump cover-to-water pump mounting bolts to 124 in lb (14 Nm).
    • Tighten the water pump cover-to-engine block bolts starting with the bottom bolt first to 19 ft lb (26 Nm).
  6. Install the heater hose to the water pump pipe.
  7. Using new gaskets, install the exhaust manifold.
  8. Install the oil level indicator and tube.
  9. Connect the brake vacuum tube to the cam housing.
  10. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  11. Install the catalytic converter.
  12. Install the coolant inlet pipe.
    • Tighten the inlet pipe-to-oil pan bolt to 19 ft lb (26 Nm). Tighten the coolant inlet pipe bolt to 124 in lb (14 Nm).
  13. Install the timing chain and tensioner.
  14. Lower the vehicle.
  15. Connect the oxygen sensor.
  16. Fill cooling system and check the system for leaks.
3.4L Engine To Remove:
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Loosen the water pump pulley bolts.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Drive belt.
    • Water pump pulley bolts and pulley.
    • Water pump bolts, pump and gasket.
    • Clean the water pump mating surfaces.
To Install:
  1. Install or connect the following:
    • Water pump gasket and pump.
    • Water pump bolts.
      1. Tighten the water pump bolts to 89 in lbs (10 Nm).
    • Water pump pulley and bolt until snug.
    • Drive belt.
  2. Tighten the water pump pulley bolts to 18 ft. lbs (25 Nm).
  3. Fill the cooling system.
  4. Check for leaks.
  5. Connect the battery ground cable.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove the drive belts. Remove the timing belt covers and the timing belt.
  4. Remove the water pump mounting bolts.
  5. Separate the water pump from the water inlet pipe and remove the water pump.
  6. Inspect the water pump and replace as necessary.

To install:
  1. Clean all gasket and O-ring surfaces on the water pump and water pipe inlet tube.
  2. Wet a new O-ring with water and install it on the water inlet pipe.
  3. Install a new gasket on the water pump.

How to Replace the Water Pump in a Pontiac Grand Am The water pump is the heart of the Pontiac grand am's cooling system, circulating the coolant. A faulty water pump can cause some serious damage to the engine of your Pontiac Grand Am. To prolong the life of your vehicle's engine, make sure to change out a bad water pump.
2.2L Grand Am Engine Disconnect the negative battery cables before you begin.Place a drain pan underneath the radiator. When the engine is cool, drain the cooling system from the radiator into the pan.Elevate the vehicle and remove the right front wheel, the splash shield, the water pump sprocket access plate and remove the exhaust manifold if your vehicle has an n automatic trans-axle.Use the water pump sprocket holding tool (Tool Part Number J 43651) and attach it to the sprocket with access plate bolts, securing the tool to the front cover of the engine.Remove the following bolts to remove the water pump: the three bolts attaching the pump to the engine block, the bolt to the engine front cover, the bolts to the sprocket and the bolt attaching the thermostat housing to the pump.Remove the old pump and install the new one, aligning the water pump sprocket to the hub with a threaded stud.Reinsert the engine cover bolt to the block to the pump, tightening the bolt to 15 foot pounds (20 Nm). Tighten two of the water pump sprocket bolts to the water pump by hand.Take out the threaded stud that was used to align the water pump sprocket to the hub and attach the last bolt to the sprocket to the pump, tightening all three to 89 foot pounds (10 Nm).Remove the water pump sprocket holding tool and attach the timing cover to the water pump sprocket access plate, tightening the bolts to 89 foot pounds (10 Nm).Reattach the splash shield, the right front wheel and the exhaust manifold if applicable.Refill the engine's cooling system with coolant and reconnect the negative battery cable. 2.4L Grand Am Engine Disconnect the negative battery cable and drain out the coolant from the cooling system when the engine is cool.Disconnect the electrical connector to the oxygen sensor and remove the exhaust manifold heat shield.Remove the following bolts and studs: the coolant inlet housing bolt connecting the exhaust manifold, the bolt to the exhaust manifold to the brace, the studs to the manifold to exhaust pipe and the bolt to the coolant inlet housing to water pump.Disconnect the following parts from each other: the exhaust manifold from the exhaust pipe by pulling the pipe downward, the oil pan from the coolant inlet pipe, the camshaft housing from the brake vacuum pipe, the cylinder head from the exhaust manifold, the heater outlet pipe from the heater hose and the timing chain cover from the tensioner.Loosen and remove the water pump bolts to the engine and the bolts from the pump to the timing chain. Remove the water pump with the cover assembly and remove the cover from the pump.Install the new pump with new gaskets. Replace the cover and tighten the bolts by hand. Attach the pump to the engine and tighten these bolts by hand.Attach the pump to the timing chain housing nuts and the coolant inlet pipe to the cover. Also tighten these by hand.Torque all bolts to the following specifications after all bolts have been inserted and hand tightened: the chain housing nuts to the pump assembly to 19 foot pounds (26 Nm), the water pump assembly to the cover to 124 foot pounds (14 Nm), and the water pump cover to the coolant inlet pipe assembly to 124 foot pounds (14 Nm).Reattach the cylinder head and the exhaust manifold, tightening the nuts to 11 foot pounds (15 Nm), the coolant inlet pipe to the oil pan, tightening the nuts to 19 foot pounds (25 Nm), and reattach the timing chain tensioner, tightening the bolts to 89 foot pounds (10 Nm).Reconnect the camshaft housing and the brake vacuum pipe and reattach the front cover, tightening the bolts to 106 foot pounds (12 Nm).Reattach the exhaust pipe and the manifold, tightening the bolts to 26 foot pounds (35 Nm), the exhaust manifold to the brace, tightening the bolts to 41 foot pounds (56 Nm) and the nuts to 19 foot pounds (26 Nm), the manifold to the exhaust pipe, tightening the nuts to 26 foot pounds (35 Nm), the heater pipe to the heater hose and reattach the exhaust manifold heat shield, tightening the bolts to 124 inch pounds (14 Nm).Reconnect the electrical connector to the oxygen sensor and the negative battery cable. Refill the engine's cooling system with coolant and start the car. Check for leaks when the engine reaches normal operating temperature. 3.1L and 3.4L Grand Am Engines Disconnect the negative battery cable and drain out the coolant from the cooling system when the engine is cool.Remove the accessory drive belt and the water pump pulley.Loosen and remove the water pump bolts and remove the pump from the engine.Install the new water pump, tightening the bolts to 89 inch pounds (10 Nm).Reattach the water pump pulley, tightening the bolts to 18 foot pounds (25 Nm).Reinstall the accessory drive belt and reconnect the negative battery cableRefill the engine's cooling system with coolant. WHERE IS THE WATER PUMP LOCATED ON A 1998 PLYMOUTH GRAND VOYAGER


Here are the steps required to change the water pump on the 3.0L engine.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove the drive belts. Remove the timing belt covers and the timing belt.
  4. Remove the water pump mounting bolts.
  5. Separate the water pump from the water inlet pipe and remove the water pump.
  6. Inspect the water pump and replace as necessary.
To install:
  1. Clean all gasket and O-ring surfaces on the water pump and water pipe inlet tube.
  2. Wet a new O-ring with water and install it on the water inlet pipe.
  3. Install a new gasket on the water pump.
  1. Install the pump inlet opening over the water pipe and press until the pipe is completely inserted into the pump housing.
  2. Install the water pump-to-block mounting bolts and tighten to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  3. Install the timing belt and timing belt covers. Install and adjust the drive belts.
  4. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Fill the cooling system to the proper level with a 50/50 mixture of clean, ethylene glycol antifreeze and water.
  5. Run the engine and check for leaks. Top off the coolant level, if necessary.
