SOURCE: gas pouring out of air filter
carb is gummed up from the old fuel turning to varnish and clogging the jets. while trying to start, its trying to inject fuel, but its clogged and taking the path of least resistance (coming out the air filter).
you'll need to drain the gas tank and remove the carb to clean it out. if unfamiliar or uncomfortable doing this, then take it to someone to do a carb cleaning.

We had the same problem. The bleach dispenser tray is located on the drum below the bleach storage pan. The dispenser tray has very small holes that were plugged by rust from the hose clamp that attached the dilution water supply hose to the bleach storage pan. I removed the top of the washing machine to discover the problem, but it may be solved by attaching a flexible tube or small hose to the end of a vacuum cleaner hose and cleaning out the dispenser tray. There is room between the dispenser tray and the storage pan and is located in the front right corner.

common problems to all older lawnmower, lots of dirt and dust the mower goes through and ages. I would first start by taking the carb apart and clean the filter with soap and water, allow it to air dry. also carburetor prob need rebuilding or replacing. Pick up some Carburetor cleaner at any auto part store and spay it down the carb, dont be afraid to spray allot in there and let it dry for 1/2 and hours. carb tend wear and parts need replacing just like any engines. 99% of the time lawn mower carb goes out before the engine will and common problems with all lawn mower. If you not mechanical incline or dont want to rebuilt it, just buy the whole new carb and replace it, fairly cheap easy to replace and will last you another 10 + years or more. www.briggsandstratton.com

The float may have a hole in it causing it to sink and not seal the needle. Look at the float and check it for holes. You can shake it and listen for gas inside it. if so replace float.

If this truck was running OK and you just went to start it and then it won't start as long as the tank has gas the fuel pump has quit. Sometimes the pump will Wake up with someone cranking the engine and knocking on the fuel tank. But understanding you statement about it starts by adding fuel and it continues to run, the fuel pump is still bad but the pressure the pump is putting out is to low to start. These trucks need 50 psi just to run 45 and they'll start adding poured in fuel and they'll run but if you were to test real preformance after started the engine will be down on power. Tank draining and tank removeall is required to change the pump. The tank is easier to remove with the driveshaft removed. so removeing the lines from the top of the tank is easier as the tank is removed. The presure can be cheacked by putting a fuel pressure gauge onto the fuel rail connector just behind the throttle body near the distrubutor. ( Fingernailing ) the valve to see if theirs gas isn't good as the fuel spraying ( even if it's not high enought pressure) on the distrubutor can get you in a fire problem as I've seen if myself. The tank removal job is a pro job or at least one that should be done where you can put out a big fire easy and not burn other cars yourself and buildings. This is not a do if your selfer job, on a never did one before note. You've done em and are handy and have a good way to remove most of the gas and get it away from the job. good. This job is a common one on GM products. and is the number one cause of shop fires even in a pro shop. Be careful and good luck
