Dell Inspiron 8500 started boot error message “primary hard disk drive 0 failure, no boot device available…strike F1 to retry reboot, F2 for setup. Ran express diagnostics and it shows two errors: Error Code OFOO: 1348…IDE Device failed: target drive aborted the command and then Error Code OFOO: 1362…Device initialization failed (null). What do I need to do? (I'm a non techie:-))

- I can't get anything from Dell besides an auto response email. I'm sorry, but I can't figure out what cable you mean. I looked underneath and opened where the hdd is but don't see a "cable". I do have all original disks that came with computer.
I reran the diagnostic disk with customized test; all runs fine until it looks at the IDE disk. Following messages:
Error Code OFOO: 0148? IDE Device failed: target drive aborted the command
Error Code OFOO: 0162? Device initialization failed (null).
Error Code OFOO: 0248? IDE Device failed: target drive aborted the command
Error Code OFOO: 0262? Device initialization failed (null).
Error Code OFOO:0448? IDE Device failed: target drive aborted the command
Error Code OFOO:0462? Device initialization failed (null).
Error Code OFOO: 1248? IDE Device failed: target drive aborted the command
Error Code OFOO: 1262? Device initialization failed (null).
Error Code OFOO: 1A48? IDE Device failed: target drive aborted the command
Error Code OFOO: 1A62? Device initialization failed (null).
Thanks for your help.
Call Dell if under warranty. Start shopping for a replacement hdd if outside of warranty. You'll need your OS disks that came with computer (hopefully). If you don't have OS/recovery disks, you can get them from Dell or even using somebody elses (match version with sticker on your laptop).
Check the hdd connection underneath laptop - make sure cable is not loose, etc.
Probably safe to say your data is gone unless you're willing to spend $$.

- There's a ribbon cable (data/power) attached to the hdd. Make sure it's nice & snug. Also get comfortable with it as that is what you'll be replacing if it's dead & outside of Dell's warranty. Probably be cheaper to buy a replacement hdd from local computer store than from Dell if necessary. This is an easy repair job. Be sure to download all the drivers (video, lan, audio, etc) specific to your laptop from Dell Support website.

Information on NEW CD's does not download. It used to until my last service update. What have they done? I'm running Windows Media Player 10 because I can edit DVD & CD files on screen!
