Jenn-Air JED8430 Electric wiring confusion

I have a new Jenn-Air JED8430 downdraft cooktop.
I am confused how to connect wiring.
Cooktop come with 4 copper wires: white, red, black, green.

Manual says neutral of this unit is grounded to the framethrough the green grounding wire. Connect the white neutral to the service neutral.

I have (2) -40amp circuit breakers - I assume this is (2)- 120v combined together to make 240V, not certain.

Wire from breakers in cabinet has only 3 wires, a black, a black with red strip, and a silver colored ground - I believe this is Aluminum wire, definatly not copper.

how does this get connected, Is it black/red stripe to cooktop red; black to cooktop black; I am really confused on ground; Is it ground to green and also white together?

Thanks for your comments, that worked and all burners now work, however the fan does not come on.

Would it help to connect the green wire to the white/ground??

Do you know any way to test the fan?

I need to buy a volt meter to see if I am getting power to the cord - hopefully not a bad fan.

Thanks, I figured it out, a bit embarrasing, I did not know the fan was variable speed, and even if the power button is pressed down for ON it does not come on unless you rotate the knob for the variable speed. All is well and working and wired as you indicated above. Many thanks.

I am trying to wire a 36" Kenmore cooktop, and I'm not sure of the wiring. From the wall I have a black, white and a bare ground. From the cook top I have a white, red, black , and green. Can some one help me with this?

I am trying to install a new Jenn Air electric cooktop 8430. The cooktop has 4 wires - green (ground), white (neutral) red (120 and black (120). I am trying to connect to to 3 wires - black (240), white neutral, and copper ground. I called Jenn Air but they were unable to help. I would assume the connection would be red and black to black and white to white. What do I do with the ground and copper wires? Thank you, Donna Ingram

I am a cabinet / laminate counter installer and came into a problem with removing the cooktop of a counter I was installing, it is a Jen-Aire jed 8340adb, and I cannot find a wiring diagram anywhere. I have read litteraly 100 posts on this site trying to find the answer, and the closest one had different colored wires. I didn't pay attention when I disconnected it (never happen again), and don't remember how it was hooked up.

There are 3 wires coming from the house black, white, and copper.
There are 4 wires coming from the cooktop black, whtie, red, and gren

I tried black to black red, white to white, and green to copper
I tried black to black, white to white red, and green to copper

I want to try black to black, copper to white, white to red, and green to the frame of the cooktop, but don't want to be responsible for messing it up.

I have three wires, red, black and white coming from the house box but the jenn-air jed 8430 has four wires including green. Where does the green wire connect?

wiring harness has 3 spots designated as follows: first one indicates L, second indicates N and the third is a ground. It also indicates it is a two wire system. I assume the first two are hot wires and obviously the third is a ground. I also calls for a two pole breaker with a minimum of 30 amp. Does this sound right to you. This unit is approximately 20 years old.

It ended up a little jumbled. Let me know if it isn't clear.

No, the green wire is just a ground and wouldn't have anything to do with it. There is cord that comes off of the cooktop that plugs into the cord that comes off of the blower assembly. Make sure it is plugged in. With the way the cooktop is wired, the blower is run off of 110 volts. You can view a diagram at:

Wiring installation

You do need a 208/240 volt supply from your service panel. The green is ground, white is nuetral, and the red and black should measure 120 volts each to ground or 240/208 between each other. It is normal for most breaker panels to supply 208/240 between adjacent insulators. If you are only getting 1/2 of that then the circuit breaker may not be straddling the insulator bar but be 1/2 notch out and both breaker pins contacting the same 110 supply.
