Question about Craftsman Garden

1 Answer

I have a 2003 craftsman 6hp lawn mower. It would start and not stay running so I cleaned the spark plug, cleaned the carb and drained the fuel. It ran decent for a mow, the next time I used it I started it for and it ran for 5 minutes and died. I can get it started briefly and it surges until it dies. I noticed a kink in the fuel line and sorted that out. I suspect when it was in for servicing a few years ago that they put the wrong carb spring on it. there are no adjustments for this carburetor that I can find. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The lawn is getting pretty long. Thank you, Steve and Tammy

16.5HP Honda engine wont run

An engine needs fuel air and spark to run. Is the air filter clean. Use a "spark checker" to see if you have spark. They are not expensive and available at stores that sell lawn mower parts. Is the spark plug clean? If it is not clean it with a wire brush.Squirt some starting fluid into the carb. If it fires your gas has gone bad or it is not getting gas. If it has sat a while gas does go bad so drain the fule tank and out in fresh gas.

Test for spark. Make sure the air filter is clean. Then make sure fuel is getting from the gas tank to the carb. Old rubber fuel line deteriorate and stop up small ports and parts in the carb. An inline fuel filter is a good idea on these larger engines. Sometimes, a larger B & S engine needs the OH valves adjusted to start easily and run properly. If after attempting to start, does the new plug get wet or even smell like gas? You should always use gas LESS than 30 day old. Gas goes stale like bread and milk. You can remove the fuel line from the fuel tank at the carb to drain old gas. You can also remove the carburetor bowl to check for water and sediment (which need to be cleaned out). Check these things and post back.

More along the lines of a dirty carb. Replacements run about $32 online, sometimes less. If you know what your doing, remove the carb, pull the bowl and spray clean it with carb cleaner. You will see a small plastic screw on the side of the carb holding down a black plastic piece, remove the screw and pull the plug - spray that clean also. Recommend replacing all gaskets when reinstalling the carb.

I have a craftsman DLS 3500 and my son put 2 part mixed gasoline in it and now it will not start. What should I do?

disconnect the fuel line at the carb and let it drain into something, then remove the screw(bolt) in the center of the fuel bowl and let the gas drain out...once it all removed, put the screw back in and hook the line back up..then remove the spark plug and use carb cleaner or something similar to clean the plug ...before you stick the plug back in after you have clean it, turn the engine over a few times to expel the gas oil mixture....refill the tank and try and start as normal...its probably going to some for a little while till all the oil is burned off

good luck

Hi, don't burn it. Try these two other easy things that might give you some relief: First, clean the air vent on the fuel cap. Second, change the spark plug.

Mower will not stay running

You have a problem in the fuel system. First start by checking fuel lines, filter, vacum fuel pump.If this checks out, remove carb. and clean. Check for water and trash in bowl of carb. or tank. This sould solve your problem.
