A Google search for this error code suggests that this may (or may not) be a disk problem. You should attempt to recover your data files (photos, documents, videos) if they are not backed up somewhere else.


A competent tech should be able to boot from a Linux-based recovery CD or DVD and recover your files. A slightly harder way is to pull out the drive and recover the files using another computer running Windows or Linux.

The machine is certainly repairable. If there is a service contract or warranty, have the supplier do the repair AFTER you have secured any files you wish to keep. The manufacturer will almost certainly erase everything in the repair process.

Try this: Reboot and select Recovery Mode, then from the c:\windows prompt type: chkdsk
Let it run through checkdisk then try it should boot up.

Ouch, sorry to hear that, your os is corrupt, could be one of many reasons including a virus, or just a corrupt HD. Get the OS disk that came with your computer and reboot, make sure to boot the DVD/CD not the HD, start the install process, you will eventually get to point where you can select to do a repair, choose that and see if it will recover, if it does you shouldnt lose anythig, but you will need to reload some drivers and an update.

The "clicking" and "disk read error" indicates a hard drive failure.  When the PC boots it can no longer read some files from or the entire HD.  The corrective measure would be to replace the HD and install your OS and programs. Alternately, you may try and reformat then re-install but then you would be operating with an unpredictable storage media and perhaps prolonging the inevitable.

If your reason for Safe Mode is to be able to access your files for purposes of backup, the constant trying/on-off just might worsen the condition of the HD. You can still try recovering by installing the HD in question inside a 2.5 enclosure to USB and install it as a removable device in a 2nd PC where you can try recover files.

Should you install a new HD and install the OS in your Gateway, you actually can use that to try and recover from the old HD. Recovery is 50/50.
