Question about Troy-Bilt Chipper Shredder

Difficult to start chipper while gears engaged

I recently purchased an 8 HP chipper / shredder at a local auction. I can find no way to dis-engage clutch while starting engine. To pull the cord while chipper blades are engaged is (to say the least) very difficult. I am not a young man and have great difficulty starting this machine in this fashion. Any suggestions?

The drive belt may be the wrong size if there is no play in the clutch. I have a 10 hp, but there is a common manual for the 10 and 8. My belt is a 4L380.

Why won't the pull cord budge?

My first idea is that the engine was shut off before the chipper or the shredder had not finished. First remove the spark plug. Next remove the covers on the chipper area and the shredder area. Now remove all material from both areas.Replace all covers, put the sparkplug back and try it.

Fix the self-propelled function (MTD, Yardman, Troy-Built, others)

I just purchased a used Yardman 24A-203C701 which, as the title states, has similar variants among other brands.
If you remove either hubcap from the pneumatic drive wheels, you may see the drive pawls with thin pieces of nylon (like a wire ty-wrap) sticking out either side. This is what passes for the engagement spring for the pawls. The fix is to remove each pawl and modify them as follows: Remove the nylon piece. On the rear side of the pawl, under the short end which engages the axle shaft, there is a place where you can drill a 1/8" pilot hole. Expand the size to 5/32" (the drill will want to catch on the pawl's metal, so drill carefully) and tap for 8-32 threads. Buy four 8-32 Allen head bolts which are 5/8" long and four 8/32 hex nuts. Using Loc-Tite on the threads, install one Allen bolt and hex nut into the front side of each pawl. When the threads are flush with the rear side of the pawl, tighten the hex nuts to jam the fastener in place. Purchase four small extension springs which just fit over the Allen bolts and which have just enough tension to pull the pawls into engagement with the axle shaft. The machine will then pull with both wheels but can still be turned and even pulled backwards.

Craftsmen 24" tiller pull start doesn't engage?

I would first pull off the recoil assembly and clean out the assembly. There should be something in the recoil assembly that should pop out and engage the motor when pulled. Lube/flush that with some light spray lube.

Need new air filter for a tecumseh shredder chipper 10 hp

You can look up the air filter with the model number and order it over the internet from a website such as, but there are others. Or, you can get the model number and go to your local small engine repair and parts shop. Mine had it on the shelf. If your chipper/shredder is like my 8 HP Craftsman with a Tecumseh engine, then as you are looking at the engine, look on the left side of the shroud or cover and way down low on the curved portion is a label with the model number on it.

I hope this is helpful for you.

Balde wheel is engaged while trying to pull start making the task extremely difficult. is there a clutch mechenism that is not dissengaging?

No. The blade is like a flywheel and is connected directly on the motor shaft. However, these usually have separate choke and throttle handles. I have found that they start easiest if the throttle is set pretty low and the choke is closed. Once it starts to fire, then slowly open the choke - allowing it to pick up a bit of speed before you open the choke all of the way. Then wait a few seconds before turning up the throttle. On the other hand, if you have debris in the machine making it hard to turn, you will have to clean some of it out before you start it. Good luck, Al K

Pull cord just pulls freely. Pull cord doens't seen to engage and I can't start the engine.

Unfortunately, disassembly of the unit will be required to diagnose and replace/ repair the malfunctioning starter recoil unit.
