The dash is notched were the neutral posisition is , this notch (shift lever needs moved out of notch) is there for two reasons , the one you need to be concerned about is the clutch disconnect , this makes it impossible to shift into any direction without clutch pedal down , sometimes this lever will become bent and not press far enough for release arm of shift lever to allow its movement
love these little tractors , they got all the features of a bigger machine but with the size ease of a compact machine , for a small farm or big home garden there's nothing this machine cant do with the right attachments on it I sure wish JD still made em !

ok, since you have the points, I assume you have the B43g Onan
engine. Was it running before the new parts were installed?
Check your point gap and make sure it is .016, plugs ahould be gapped at .025 Make sure your plug wires are good too. Should be somewhere between 0 and 10,000 ohms per foot, when measured with an ohmmeter. Once everything is rechecked for gap distance, make sure there is no spark by pulling plug out, leaving wire on and ground the outside of plug to the chassis of the tractor.
Crank over and look for the spark. Coils are about $100, so you want to eliminate everything else first.
Diagnosing a points ignition for no spark is really simple. Do you have 12V at the coil? Do you get a spark when you connect and disconnect the negative terminal of the coil to ground? If not you have a bad coil.

percussive maintenance my friend. Try banging on the solenoid and starter with a hammer while in the start position. Also, if you have a voltmeter, you can see where voltage is getting to and that will help you as well.

Engine OFF, raise drive wheels and check if transmission is locked

Purple wire goes to the solenoid on starter. If you installed starter with single wire post all you have to do is mount a solenoid to the frame just in front of starter, existing batt/starter cable goes to one solenoid post, purchase a short red cable and install on other solenoid post and run it to the starter, plug purple wire into new solenoid and the way you go.
Testimonial: "This was great advise bought a solenoid and away i go thx"

Park brake switch is the most likely culprit, any other would cause the tractor to not turn over in the crank position.
