2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 brake release cable broke and won't release the emergency brake. I checked the brake release handle and cable and discovered a small nut like metal piece on the floor below the brake release handle that has cable wire running through the middle of it. How can I repair this? Also is there a way to manually release the emergency brake so I can drive the truck?

With truck running, try putting the truck in reverse, then neutral, try the brake release again. At first the lever pulled out and the pedal didn't move. Then I put the truck in drive, it won't budge, I looked for a break in the cable and saw nothing, it looked fine. I ran to the web site and looked for advice. Meanwhile my wife, who knows nothing but to put gas in a vehicle and go, climbed into my truck and put the truck in reverse and neutral, then released the brake. She got me on this one.

Hoping it's broken at the release handle as they usually are! Get a roll of dead soft mechanics wire at the parts store. remove the cable at the hood latch end, and securely twist your mechanics wire to the cable end. Then wrap the connection with electrical tape, leaving enough wire to match the length of the release cable, and maybe a couple of feet more. SLOWLY, AND CAREFULLY pull the cable through into the passenger compartment.Remove the broken cable, and attach the new one.Pull it back in the other direction. This works, but you must be patient and gentle.Good luck!

If the emergency brake cable broke, then the brake should disengage by itself, unless there is rust in the braking system preventing it from doing so.

An engaged brake needs tension on the cable to continue to hold the vehicle still.

You could have it towed by a flat bed that slowly draws the car up onto its flat bed, even if the brakes or park was engaged. Allow the tow truck operator to worry about this problem.

Check the emergency brake pedal and make sure it is not on a bit. When the emergency brake are applied the daytime running light go out.

I had the same problem on my 2003. Open the driver door all the way. Get on your knees just outside the door. Follow the plastic tub that holds the parking brake release cable inside the truck. Start from the release lever and follow to the end of the tube. There will be a metal lever that the cable was attached to before it broke. You have to pull that lever with your hand to release the parking brake. Very Important!!!...Hold the parking brake activation pedal with your other hand when you release the brake. Let the pedal out slowly when you pull the metal release lever. The pedal will come back very fast and you could injure yourself if you are not careful. Good luck!

on the handle there is a clip holding the rod one each side could have come off. or the hole where it goes is broke. u can get aftermarket any parts store

Somewhat easy to replace. The part is a dealer item (purchase only from Chevrolet dealer) If you are going to do this yourself, take many photos on the progression of the job to refer back to when putting it back together. Good Luck!

the release on the ratchet mechaninsm located down on the driver's side kick panel is stuck, be careful with your fingers. the release will come free with some manipulation

you need to get under the dash or kick panel on the left hand side,,,take a flat blade screw driver with you and a pair of plyers,,,you should be able to trip the release with just those tools.

there is a cable running from handle to brake assembly it is probably broke there is a release lever under there on brake about a one inch lever hold down on brake and move this and let up on pedal.
