Question about Nextar Q3 GPS Receiver
I've been thru 3 Omnitech GPS systems. The first problem was the touch screen stop working 3 weeks after I had it. Took it back to Staples and exchanged it. 3 weeks after that, the touchscreen stop woking also. So I took it back AGAIN and got another one, this time a month later it lost the signal and kept searching for it even though it said it was getting a good signal. I took it back Staples gave me a refund and the manager said he wasn't selling it anymore because of to many issues with the device. It is garbage for sure.
Omnitech GPS systems are very decent for me. I have 2.
There were several reports of GPS problems beginning on or about 11-14 June 2009. This is due to the GPS navigation messages rollover from 255 to 0. Some GPS systems fail to accommodate this behavior; Omnitech is one of them.
Staples did provide a firmware update a few days later. There are also other firmware updates available on the net. I personally successfully update the firmware and resolve the problem around June 15, 2009.
Otherwise, the problem should go away after 1-2 weeks.

Please do NOT
attempt to make this repair -
You may or may not permanently damage your GPS device!
I got my OmniTech GPS from Staples late August 09.
Everything works fine at room temperature 70 degree F and below.
I realized that when I put the GPS in my car (Las Vegas at 100-110F outside), the touch screen stopped working at high temp. So I put it in front of the air condition vent of my car - and viola -
the touch screen came up again, and worked fine.
My conclusion: some tensions (expansion due to heat) must prevent the touch screen from doing its job.
So I took the GPS apart (4 little screws in the back+2 screws on the Printed Circuit Board inside). Disconnect the battery and the
speaker (unplug the connectors). The touch screen is fastened by
4 plastic snap-in hooks (or anchors or fasteners). I noticed that the
top (2) hooks are pretty tight. When I tried to wiggle the screen
out of those hooks I broke the 2 upper (top) fasteners (hooks).
No worries, the back touch screen pushes against some kind of
anti-static foam on the PCB, and the PCB is fastened by 2 hooks
and 2 screws.
I put GPS device together, except for the broken hooks.
The touch screen works fine now, at temp 110F and above.
No more problem with the touch screen.
