Question about Philips Magnavox 27MS343S 27" TV

1 Answer

This set has no picture on the top third of the screen plus the top edge of the picture has foldover. I tried the vertical adjustments that are accessable in the service mode but this did not help. From the posts I've seen, this is a common problem with this set but no solutions were given.

Reduced vertical width and foldover at top of screen after set warms up. Picture is about 4'' when set is cold. No attempt has been made to service.

The set has bad capacitors and an ic that needs to be replaced in order to rectify the problem, and there is a chance that bad solder joints will need to be addressed with a soldering iron.

Folddover at top of picture about an inch from top

Replace cap. 2465 and cap. 2561. That should take care of it unless the vertical transistors are bad or there are other bad caps.

Wide black area top of the screen.

More than likely it's not the crt. If the picture has "foldover" at the top of where the picture is currently, then more than likely there are bad caps. in the vertical scan circuit. If not, the vertical sizing probably just needs to be adjusted. You will have to get in to the service menu to do that.

Sounds like retrace lines. Leaky caps or worse can cause this.. Are you getting any vertical foldover at the top of the screen?

DS25390 Verticle foldover

If you have a picture but the top is folded over, your vertical IC is probably good and you need to replace the pump-up capacitor next to the IC. When the pump-up cap (typically a 47 or 100uF 35V cap) is open then the picture will have white lines and foldover at the top. The typical vertical output IC is the LA7838, but I am not familiar with exactly which output IC your set uses.

Half a screen

The picture on your TV screen is driven from the center to the top and bottom of the screen by the vertical drive circuit. The fact that you can see the entire picture means you have a problem called foldover. This is caused by a failure in the vertical drive circuit where the vertical saw signal is altered by a component failure within the vertical drive circuit. You cannot solve this problem but any good repair shop should be able to correct the problem at a reasonable cost.
