Do you use rechargeable batteries? The 176C seems to be extremely picky about the voltage. I had the same problem. Afer changing to non-rechargeable batteries, everything works fine again. Not great for the environment, but for my bearings.

Duracell batteries leaked in my Garmin 62st.. New batteries too..

You can take the bad batteries out and clean up the battery compartment, using isopropal alcohol (rubbing alcohol and a lot of q tips). . Problem is if the acid wrecked the contacts. Light corrosion (green, corroded copper color) needs to be removed with sand paper or emery cloth, until all the contacts are shinny metal again. maybe spray some silicon on the newly shinned metal to slow down re-corrosion. If the damage is serious, i.e. the metal is eaten away, then someone with soldering experience needs to desolder the bad metal and resolder in good. This can be quite expensive is you take it to a technician.

It's either the logic board or some component that has gone bad. No real way to repair it, unless you tear it down and it's maybe a bad joint or something simple like that.
Best I can tell you to do is to FULLY discharge the battery, as in turn it on, let it die and keep pushing the power button to make sure it's dead. Takes about 48 hours. Once you do that, plug it in and DO NOT try to turn it on, just let it do it's thing and see what happens. Maybe hooking it to a computer after that and seeing if an update will help, also make sure that if there are any cables, external antennas, or cards plugged into it, to remove them during all of that. Best of luck for a resolution.

Need repair 176C GPS ok using plug power but battery damaged internal batt connection and will not turn on using int batt device is in NY buddy has few bucks & not wanting to buy new

I have done repairs to similar thing, what I have done, is get a "Pack" of batteries, with leads on them, similar to a cordless phone battery, but the same voltage as the ones the GPS uses, now, solder the wires onto the correct terminals. or the circuit board, make sure you rid every trace of corrosion too.Your good to go.

Did you use rechargeable batteries? The Garmin seems to be extremely picky about enough voltage. I had good rechargeables which I use in my foto flashlights, but they did not suffice for the Gamin. Simple non-rechargeable batteries ones solved my problem. Not good for the environment, but for my bearings...

Battery contacts

The only way is to send it back to Garmin. They will not sell the part. I just folded a piece of aluminum foil and poked a hole in it and unscrewed the contact, placed the foil under the contact, screwed the contact back down and then folded the aluminum down so the battery end could contact it. .

Camera will not turn on

The problem is the battery casing, in which you insert the batteries, either the wiring inside the camera is dead or cut, or the metal receptors for the battery are no longer working....contact the manufacturer or find a camera repair shop.
