Was away for a few days and pet sitter reported neither freezer nor refrig was cooling. I had a temp issue a few weeks ago, defrosted refrig and everything seemed to work fine when I turned back on.

I have vacuumed underneath and from back with flat tool. Cleaned interior and cleaned out water catch in front of freezer. Added about 1 oz of bleach down water drain which did drip back out into refrig section clear. Nothing comes on except the light. I bought this refrig about 3 yrs ago from Home Depot.

SOURCE: MAGIC CHEF CTF1920ARA - Freezer works, Refrig. portion does not.

Sounds like a defrost problem. Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.

  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.

SOURCE: I have a 6-7 year old Magic chef top freezer,

Hi,

The defrost drain is located just under the cooling coils in the back of the freezer. You will need to unload the food and remove the shelves from the freezer. Take the back panel off from inside the freezer and you will see a hole just below the coils. Flush it with hot water using a turkey baster or small hose. See the link below for more details.

If the freezer is staying cold it sounds like a defrost system problem. A bad timer, heater or thermostat can cause frost to build up on the coils and block air flow to the refrig side. Check out ACMEHowTo.com for troubleshooting the defroster problem.
There is a small duct between the freezer and refrigerator side if this is blocked the frig side won't cool.

Melted plastic floor in Freezer

The refrig is possibly a Magic Chef . This refrig has the coils AND defrost heater , under the freezer floor . If the defrost thermostat sticks , the heater will eventually burn thru the aluminum coil cover and melt the freezer floor . However , with the freezer floor burnt thru , the freezer fan is not pulling the complete air flow , over the coils , which in turn , a lot more electricity is being used , to try to keep the complete refrig cool . To repair , you would need 1 ) defrost thermostat , 2 ) freezer floor , 3 ) foil coil and heater cover , 4 ) a few hours or days ( if not done before ) .
So , no , not an easy fix .

Both freezer and refrigerator temp variations

in most refridgerator cabins is a air dam at top right of side by side and it could be sticking open and working other times or it could get stuck in defrost cycle due to defrost timer not working properly.defrost timer would be first thing to look to.

My GSS22SGRE Side by Side freezer & Refrig temp is too warm

Possible the defrost thermostat is bad and need to be replaced. Not allowing the evaporator coil ice buildup to melt , which acts like an insulation and restricts the air flow in the freezer compartment.
