Question about Western Digital My Book Essential 1TB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive
I have the same problem. When I connect the device the sound for a new usb-device appears but I cannot see my hdd in My Computer or in any other way.. :/
I found a program that works to at least access the drive and remove a majority of the files. It's called PC Inspector File Recovery and is freeware. Also, here's a link for a few other useful free recovery programs to try... http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2008/01/24/top-10-free-data-recovery-software/
Hope this works for you!

I have had similiar issues using caddies there seems to be many connecting parts that can fail or become old and dirty failing to make contact with the hard drive you could remove the hard drive and check these contacts make sure they are clean and making contact
You could just remove the hard drive from the caddy and connect it directly inside your computer as a normal hard drive
You would have to remove the hard drive and use a usb sata ide kit
you will then have to connect it to your computer using a usb port
Once connected to another computer to a usb port and power supply you should get a message found new hardware and it should install the drivers it should show on your computer or you might have to install it manually
click start click on computer to open you should see this drive
If you dont.
Click start control panel administrative tools computer management device manager scroll down universal serial bus controllers you could see a Yellow Question / Exclamation Mark? ! or a Red X
you will need to update/reinstall drivers
right click to reinstall drivers.
If you can see your usb drive but its not working
ports (com&lpt) right click update driver
Once you see this drive just click on it to open and copy all or any data you want and save it to another usb drive
or get one of these
NEW!2.5" SATA TO USB 2.0 external HDD enclosure case AU
Hope this helps.

Follow the steps given below to refresh USB ports. If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response Thanks, Joe
1. Right-click My Computer icon on the desktop, and then select Properties.
2. Click the Hardware tab.
3. Click the Device Manager button.
4. Click the plus (+) sign to the left of Universal Serial Bus controllers.
5. Right-click the device listed under Universal Serial Bus controller and select Uninstall.
6. Click OK to confirm the removal of the device.
Please note, repeat Steps 5 and 6 until all the devices under Universal Serial Bus Controller are removed.
7. Shut down the computer.
CAUTION: Ensure that the Shut Down option is selected, instead of the Restart option.
8. Wait for 5 seconds and then restart the computer. When the computer restarts, a "Windows has detected new or added hardware" message window will open.
The above steps will refresh the USB ports.
Now connect the USB devices like mouse, video camera, your external usb hard disk...usb hubs...whatever you like and the drivers should install automatically.
Tip: It is always recommended to connect the main usb devices at the rear end usb port, as they require more power to initiate.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response
