The unit is clean, there are no charred or loose wires, and the breaker had never tripped. How do I diagnose the problem
Compressor hums when it is either frozen or when the starting capacitor is no good. Change the latter and see what happens.
Thanks. Are you talking about the Start/run capacitor for the fan (Capacitor Part # 3100248.602)? Is there a way to test that capacitor before I order a part?
Can I leave the power on and the compressor humming while I test it or is that going to damage the unit?
First, always pull power when working on unit. I was referring to the run capacitor for the compressor. U can use a capacitor tester to check its value.
And DON'T let the motor hum!!!!!That can burn out the windings and render the compressor useless !!!!!!!!
Turn it off !!!!!!!!!!! You can overheat the motor and burn out the windings. Plug back in when you have replaced the starting capacitor.
Then see what happens.

Fixya should be attaching parts list, exploded drawing and electrical plan. I don't see a second capacitor in the parts list? Are you recommending replacing the 3 pole capacitor in the drawings or the 2 pole capacitor that doesn't seem to be listed in the parts list?
