Question about Iomega Computers & Internet

Open Question

My Iomega portable hard drive (Model # RPHD-U) powers up when I plug it into any USB port, but neither my system nor any other system that I connect it to can find it. The problem is not with the cable because I can plug a similar portable hard drive (different manufacturer) in using that cable and it works.

SOURCE: External hard drives not recognized by MacBook Pro using SIIG eSATA II 2 Port ExpressCard-M

Fixed- I purchased one of the following esata cards with the JMB360 chipset and it worked in my brand new Macbook pro 17" right out of the box.   My other eSata from SIIG, inc would not mount any drives or accept any drivers.    So the silicon based eSata's must have some type of hardware conflict with Macbooks.  (P.S.  I purchased the one from Best Connectivity for $20).   These cards all use the JMB360 Chipset:

  • ApioTek (1 port card) (EXTREME eSATAII Express Card)
  • Best Connectivity (1 esata)
  • GWC Technology (GWC BS1020) (2 ports)
  • nGear (Moved to the Sil3132 chipset list. See my more recent post about this)
  • PPA Int’l (2 ports)
  • VC (an original brand of Vintage Computer Inc.)
  • Syba (1 Port)
  • Sunix ECSA24J (Discontinued)

Have you tried connecting it with the Firewire cable that came with it? (your pc may not have the correct port) or connecting it with a different usb cable?
Has the drive been dropped? it has a protection system which shuts the drive down when it is dropped. you may need to put the HDD into a different caddy or plug it directly into a desktop pc's motherboard to retrieve you data.
I hope this helps.

I require instruction on the use of my portable hard drive.

its very easy. just connect to your computer usb port. If your drive requires power put the power adapter. Before connect to frontpanel USB of your system. Once check your front panel usb is working or not. Check with some other memory stick or mouse etc.. Because if your front panel usb connect reverse there is chance to lose your hard drive..

Hello Sir,

does this disc have some external power source?

If so then just plug it in.

If it takes power through USB then your USB port is damaged, try other USB port.

Hello, I plugged in my iomega 1tb desktop hard drive storage device and the drive does not appear in my drive or computer. I do have the new hardware 'sound' that comes up but I dont have the drive show up...

Iomega 1TB Desktop Hard Drive is a dedicated usb 2.0 plug and play external storage device that has an ability to transfer at 480Mbits/second. having these large capacity storage drive needs a fast connection and additional power source to make sure to run the external unit system properly.

just make sure both power and data cables are properly plugged and connected respectively. if you are using it with a desktop, please always plug your usb connection from the Iomega 1TB external drive to the rear USB port in line where you built-in LAN not plug it in the frontload ports. some motherboard manufacturers uses usb 1 and/or 1.1 only for frontload desktop casing provision.

thank you.
