Question about Toshiba 57HX81 57" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Picture is of poor quality (wavy)

Wow, am I happy I found this website..
I got a 57HX81 from a neighbor a few months ago, and the picture is horrible when watching tv (regular cable). I don't know if it looked this bad when my neighbor owned it. When watching a DVD, the picture is clear and great. I had Comcast come out to see if the line was okay, and it tested good. This may be a dumb question, but do I need to get digital cable or an HD box?? Could that explain why the picture is so bad??

    Thanks for your reply.

In answer to your questions, the DVD is connected using A/V cables, and I am not using a cable box. Do you think that is my problem?? Should I be using a cable box- maybe with digital or HDTV reception??

Thanks again, Shuttle83. I think I will get a cable box hooked up and see if that cures the problem. If it doesn't, then I'll look into getting the tuner checked.

I have the same problem. I am using comcast as my cable proivder. I have the HD service. All my HD channels are great. All the other channels are wavy. Is the TV a goner, or can it be fixed without spending a fortune?

This may indicate a problem with the RF tuner. When you are using the DVD player is the output of the DVD using the F (RF Coax) Conncetor or is the DVD connect to the TV using the Video/Audio cables (either Composite (Red, White, Yellow) or Component (Red, Green, Blue)). I am do however believe this to be a RF tuner problem. Make sure that the TV is set to channel 3 and the cable box is connected to the TV (set to channel 3). What you could also do is get digital cable and use the video output jack as the input to the TV on one of your aux positions.

I would first make sure the tunner is on channel 3 when using the regular cable box, or if you are using the TV's cable ready features make sure the tunner is working correctly, this might have to be done by a qualifide TV repair person.

I hope this helps
Thank you,

    Hello sushimom3,

I would suggest that you ge a cable box for simplicity but technically you should have your TV tunner checked. However if you get a cable box the outputs of it can be put into your TV and then the issue of the poor picture quality will be solved.

    I hope this helps,

    Thank you,

It sounds like you aren't cycling fully.
It sounds like you are on the TV (RF/Cable) input, then you switch input to Component 1 (for your DVD) and watch the DVD, then hit the input selector again, switching it to Component need to keep switching the input until you are back on the TV / Cable input.
