Question about Heating & Cooling

Amana heat pump was working fine. Inside blower still working, outside condenser has 230 at contacts and 24 volts at time delay. unit will run if contacts pushed in by hand. high and low pressure switches are made. not sure about time delay, defrost board or defrost relay. i can by pass all the controls and it operates in cool mode for now. what five devices is most likely to be defective?

one half of the breaker you moved is not making contact in the panel or moving the breaker caused the fan relay to be on the same 115 volt leg as the power leg. If the breaker is connected to two points in the panel and you have 115 volts on each side of the breaker (230 volts) You can move the breaker one notch higher or lower or switch wires on the breaker to correct the circuit.

Looks like a heat pump? Is the compressor running when in heating? Is the compressor running when in cooling? If yes in heating sounds as if your reversing valve is either stuck or has lost voltage. The heat pumps I'm familiar with, the reversing valve is only energized in cooling. With a meter you can test this valve (inside condenser) with the breaker off for condenser. Test the voltage on the wires leading to valve, in both heating and cooling. Should have 24ish in one or the other but not both. If yes than the valve is likely bad. If 24 volts in both than you have a configuration or wiring problem. Same with no volts at all. Do you not have back up electric heat?? Good Luck!!

My goodman cental air system is having problems. First, the blower inside (furnace) keeps running for hrs after the outside condensor shuts down. Now, the condenser blower motor wont operate at full speed....


the cause of your indoor fan running all the time or for long time after your heat pump has stopped heating is the fan delay relay. It has welded its internal contacts together. If you take off the side below the control panel, the fan delay relay is normally mounted on the header where the fan discharges. Good news, the fan delay relay are fairly inexpensive and easily to change.

As far as the condensing fan motor not running at full speed, when it was changed, did the technician install the correct fan motor. Most condensing fan motors are either 875 rpm or 1175 rpm. They are exactly the same size and if the technician did not look closely he could have installed the wrong rpm motor. There is another possibility, he may have used the wrong capacitor. I have seen the condensing fan actually operate backwards at a lower than normal rpm. The fan if properly installed will discharge air upwards.

Fedder Heat Pump not Running


you can check your heat pump on the outside by turning off the power and listening to see if it makes a whoosh sound. and then turn it back on you should hear it kick in. Is the outside unit running? Sounds like an electrical problem maybe in the breaker or the contactor on the inside of the unit. This is where the 24 volts from the thermostat call to the 240 volts to kick on the condenser fan and compressor. Be real careful in messing with this because of the high voltage.

I was leaning towards a bad contactor. Either sticking sometimes or not making good contact. I would inspect the contactor for pits or burn marks near the contacts. DO SO WITH POWER OFF of course...but, what's the reset button you are referring to?? I'm assuming this is a heat pump, please send model number!!

The thermostat has a timer on the on- cycle (5 min delay for the outside unit and blower inside) if you are not gonna call a service guy then ( for $25) you can go to homedepot (whatever you got out there) and buy a honeywell vertical digital heat and ac t'stat.
this one doesnt require you to set it up for a particular application. this may solve your problem. but as for warm air out of the registers you need a service guy to check that
