Question about Hayward Pool Products HAYWARD 1.5 HP 2 SPEED SUPER PUMP - INGROUND POOL PUMP -

1 Answer

I have a clicking noise coming from the new Hayward super pump.

When I removed the cover where the electricity is connected, I can see the 4 springs that are connected to what looks like a nylon bushing riding on a small shaft that spin to be moving in and out, that is what is making the clicking noise. Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

Is the motor running? It will make an audible 'click' when it turns on and another as it slows to a stop once shut off. If it keeps doing it during the run time, you are likely not feeding it the correct voltage. Otherwise, one click at the start and end is normal.

If the motor is set for the correct voltage and the line voltage is ok, the motor is starting to fail and will need service at a local electric motor repair shop.

How do I break down pool motor aol 1-1/2 hp

It depends which pump you have, on hayward super II you shut off the breaker, remove the rear motor cover, disconnect the electrical wires, then remove the 4 (9/16")bolts holding the motor to the "wet end" which is where the basket is. Now, pop off the diffuser, sometimes it stays in the wet end when you remove the motor. At the rear of the motor, use a 12mm wrench to hold the shaft, then unscrew the impeller (counter-clockwise) after removing the impeller, theres another plastic plate that lifts off, remove the plate, now there are 4 (9/16")bolts to remove in order to separate the motor from the seal plate. You have now broken down the pump. If you replace the motor, make sure to get a new seal as well (ps201)

99.9999% OF THE TIME its the bearings going bad, and need t be replaced asap.due to a bad shaft seal... search your area for your local pool pump motor repair guy with free testing. should be around $75 to repair it if caught in time.. here in florida lizards, frogs, grass and snakes and the such get into the motor and you can get that grinding sound but it will soon fade, but can restrict airflow and make your motor run hot and fail prematurely.. so if the noise doesn't fade in say a hour or two.. have it checked .. here is how to remove most pump motors just click on this link.. hope it helps ya .. jay florida

Hayward 1hp super pump stops working

Your motor has a thermal protection switch in it the reacts to an overheating condition. Once the motor cools enough it will turn back on. You may be able to have the motor rebuilt for about half the cost of new if it is not damaged to severely. Take it to a local electric motor repair shop for service. If it is damaged beyond repair, you can shop around for a new one. If you would like a quote, contact us at with your pump model number and we can quote it.

Leak between seal plate and pump/strainer housing

The pump seal is leaking and needs replacing and requires removing four 3/8 bolts (9/16) wrench and removing the motor then the diffuser to get to the impeller and seal . A 7/16 wrench holds the rear motor shaft behind the springs and impeller spins off to reveal the seal which has two parts one on the impeller with a spring and one in the seal plate is white ceramic/ porcelan whatever they use. Part number is an SPX1600KA on super pumps and 1500KA wassome above grounds. When replacing do not touch the mating white and black surfaces with your fingers.
