Microphone just stopps working out of the blue

Both my mom and I have a HP Pavilion dv 1000 notebook computer. We have been using them to make skype calls and after several weeks, both microphones just stopped working, mid coversation. I tried an external microphone but it didn't pick up sound. The only sound the person on the other end of the line could here, was when I pulled my microphone jack in and out of the port. It would make a clicking noise on the other end. Do you know what may have caused these mics to suddenly die and how do we fix them or get an external mic to work?

Thanks for the suggestions but I tried both of those. I went to control panel and tried to test the hardware and troubleshoot but when I do the voice recording test it shows NO sound on the sound meter. It's as if some voice recording driver just shut down and stopped working. I should be able to use an external mic and the one I bought isn't even working.

Anyone ever seen or heard about this problem before? Both dv 1000s pretty much had their mics die around exactly the same time in terms of usage.

    Other suggestions?

I have the exact same problem/machine that occured in the middle of a skype call. To date haven't found a solution online. I'll keep scouring the forums. I've tried the suggestion listed here with no result.

Hey! I have the same problem with my Toshiba P105. I use Skype and the microphone stopped working suddently. It happens to be that it does not work with Linux either...!!

I thought it was a physical problem... probably that my daughter pulled it up improperly. But now I see that it might not be what caused the problem.. Does anybody has an idea about what is going on?

I just came across this post while looking for my own solution. I have a Dell C610 laptop (not new by any means) running Windows XP. Last night while I was in the middle of an MSN conversation with a friend of mine, the microphone completely died and none of the fiddling with settings I've been able to do has brought it back. As the original post says, nothing registers in Windows Sound Recorder (or Audacity) when I try to play sound. The "clicks" as I pull the microphone in and out of the hole are the only thing that show up as making any noise.

This laptop also has an internal microphone (pinhole sized, the quality of the sound is bad at the best of times... they built it near the fan & the speaker) that doesn't seem to been affected by this. When I pull out the non-functioning microphone connector from it's hole, the internal mic is able to pick up the sound of my voice.

Try un-installing Skype and see if the mics work after that...Maybe Skype is causing the issue. If both computer's mics stopped at nearly the same time it's gotta be a software issue....or both computers got a virus. The odds of the microphone hardware going out at nearly the same time has to be very low...but not impossible.

I have a Pavilion dv6-3025dx and cannot get the sound to work for skype. Obviously there is a camera and that works fine but I could not get the audio to work - do I have to add a microphone. Can you help?

I understand that you are not able to us the microphone with Skype. As per the information provided in User Guide for the model it seems that the model has an Internal microphones .

Try configuring the internet microphone to use with Skype.
Open Skype - Tools - options- Audio settings- Set the input device as internal microphone and check the operation.
