When distribution came back to B.C. Rich in 1974, a system of serial number coding began using a 5-digit code (XXYYY) with the first 2 digits indicating the year and the last 3 indicating the production number. That would make the first guitar of 1974 to have been numbered 74000, followed by 74001, 74002, 74003, etc. Throughout the '70s, production numbers were low enough that the serial numbers pretty much reflect the year of manufacture.
This is actually not an easy question to answer a Gibson (as you may already know) has used multiple numbering schemes..Your guitar may be a 2000... This is from Gibson's site: "Les Paul Classic: This model features an ink stamped serial number with no "MADE IN USA" (just as we used on the original 1952-1960 Les Pauls). Most will be 5 to 6 digits in length, but the earliest examples feature 4 digit serial numbers. There should be a space after the 1st digit with the 4 and 5 digit serial numbers, and no space with the 6 digit numbers. The 1st digit indicates the year of manufacture for the 4 & 5 digit serial numbers, these were used from 1989-1999. The 1st and 2nd indicate the year of manufacture for the 6 digit serial numbers which we've been using since 2000. Ibanez serial number can tell you two things, year of manufacture and factory [or country] of manufacture. with most typical Ibanez serial numbers the first 2 digits will indicate year, or the first digit will indicate the last digit of the year, but there are also some that indicate no year at all. There is no master list to correlate to a model number,This particular style serial number will either be on the neck plate or right into the back of the headstock. It consists of a letter, A - L, followed by a 6 digit number. The letter stands for the month, A for January etc., the first 2 digits will be the year, 76 is 1976, 96 is 1996, the last 4 digits will be the consecutive production number for that months production, 1356 would be the 1356th guitar produced that month. This form of serial numbering is still used today on guitars where the number is impressed into the back of the headstock. A761356 - The 1356th guitar produced in January '76, hope that helps
It would help if you had identified the guitar maker and location of the serial number. I assume it's a Yamaha, but the serial number doesn't coincide with any of the typical systems they used. The first two numbers could be the year of manufacture, but the earliest Yamaha I could find was 1966, so you may want to go direct to Yamaha and ask if they recognize the number based on the model number.Yamaha Corporation of America
