My Toshiba is the older 5105-S501. The hdd recently died and I replaced it with another hdd from a broken HP laptop. How can I get it to work on my Toshiba I always get the prompt to start in 'safe' or 'normal' mode but it tries to boot but doesn't.

If you purchase a new OS disc of your choice, assuming it will work on your laptop, just palace the disc in the drive, boot from the disc and follow the on screen prompts. Hope that helps.
This can be problem with Harddiak. If it is under warranty get a replacement ro try using some HDD password removal tool and if not successful replace the hdd
Yes it could be, the notorius GeForce2Go is a replaceable card on that model. I have seen, lines, blurry text, and Boot loop issue caused by it. Be warned, the replacement card is expensive.
Cheaper & better finding a complete laptop with busted screen.
