Try changing your IDE/SATA cable. It may even just be loose.

Re-seat the DVD drive so it makes proper connection then boot up the laptop and go into the BIOS then check the BIOS to see if the DVD drive is detected. If the DVD drive is not detected then it is faulty and needs to be replaced.

Did you go into the bios settings and check the status of the hard drive? it would seem that is where the problem lies.

Try a different usb port. Maybe a 1TB external hd is too big for your old computer to recognize. Old computers cannot handle a drive that large.

Check the DVD Drive cable connections, make sure they are plugged-in properly. Check BIOS if DVD is detected; you may have to reset to default configuration. If it's detected in BIOS, press F12 while on the Dell screen to access advance boot menu & select CD/DVD drive option. Insert a bootable disc like windows installer & see if your drive will read it. Make sure the software for this DVD drive is installed into the PC and then your drive is connected to be detected and installed, This will also remove off all previous drives that might cause errors.

Dvd drive not detected. After burning a DVD the drive went dead and is no longer detectable.

If you have some experience in opening up the PC. remove the main cover & unplug the power connector & the Data Cable from the DVD Drive. ( the conputer power has to be switched off) Replug back the cables as it were & start the PC.

It should detect by now
