Loosen Fuel cap. Sounds like Tank Vent is clogged.

When it stalls quickly loosen gas cap and listen for a suction sound. If you get that then Vent is clogged and I bet the mower will start without waiting an hour

SOURCE: I have cub cadet 129 with 12 hp kohler cast iron

This would most likely indicate an air leak in the intake tract. Another possibility would be a partially clogged main jet in the carb. Either problem results in a lean running engine with VERY high exhaust temps. Bad news if not corrected.

Hope this helps,

Kohler 149 cc engine won't start seems to be getting no fuel

This may not fix your problem but it does deal with that engine. I just tried to replace the spark plug in that engine and it took me 5 hours. The Kohler plug in the engine that came from the factory cannot be found in traditional stores and it is a strange size, 11/16 or 12 mm. The Kohler plug is #1413211. I could not find a match in a book. Divine intervention lead me to a place where they were fixing the Kohler 149cc engine that had the same plug in it that mines did. I discovered that a Champion 8815 does fit the engine but it takes a 18mm socket. It did fix the problem and the mower works. Hopefully this will save someone my hassles.

If it has a couple hundred hours or more, try cleaning the slips rings on the back of the rotor shaft. They should be very shiny and not black or polished looking.

1975, 7.5 Kohler marine genset, runs only with the reset depresed

Can't search for a manual without model, type, serial, etc numbers...

A few things to take a look at:

1) Oil level / pressure sending unit. This is normally bypassed as long as the start switch is pressed. When engine starts, and switch is released, engine will die if sending unit is defective, or you are low on oil.

2) Exhaust temperature sensors. Older units were notorious for burning these up.

3) Cooling Water Temperature sensor. These cause trouble often, but mostly due to water pump impeller being eaten away by galvanic action and not able to pump water as effecively. End result is water temp higher than normal, which trips the switch, which kills the engine.

4) Alternator (generator) output not as it should. If output doesn't rise to proper level within a few seconds of engine start, the engine will be shut down.

5) Choke not working as it should

6) Bad fuel, bad fuel pump, clogged fuel filter.
