Coolpix S4, display doesnt show any image.

Hi, My coolpix S4 camera doesn show any image on the display. all the menus and the previous pictures taken are working fine and displays perfectly. I got the Nikon ppl to get it serviced, and it cost me a lot of money and it has gone bad again. i dont want to get it repaired again because i have no guarantee that it wont go bad again. I've tried opening the camera by myself. But even after removing all the screws, i cant open it.Is ther some way i can open it. some lock somewhere where i have to check. I have no more hopes for this camera. So i just want to go ahead and see wats in ther anyways..
this model is really bad and i dont recoomment to anyone.
Can someone help me out here.

My screen is blank also. I haven't done anything to repair it yet. I am hoping that I can find a place in NYC to get it repaired.

I too have the coolpix s4 camera and now have a blank screen when in picture taking mode?!? The other functions work properly and show up fine on the display screen when I review them, but nothing shows up when I am attempting to take new pic's or new video, what's the deal? Can anyone tell me what Nikon has said as a valid explanation for this defect? Or can anyone tell me what needs to be done to fix the issue/problem? Thanks, Dave

I have the same problem. Worked one day not the next. All other functions are fine. I took it to the dealer and they reset it but to no avail. Tried tapping it but still nothing. This is my second Nikon by first lasted 25 years. I'm very dissapointed. Any other suggestions other than tapping it?

The same problem with my camera - it's been faithfully taking pictures for three years and now, just a black screen. Tried tapping and nothing. I don't know who to contact or where to take it. Is anyone going to get their's fixed or is it on to another camera? Arggghhh.

  • deepa_seran Oct 22, 2008

I have the same problem. It used to take one picture after tapping. Now it has completely blacked out. I removed all the screws, but can't get it to open. Please post if anyone knows how to open it. I would buy a new cheap camera for the cost of repair.

I had the same problem!! I took the camera to my daughter's graduation and the screen was black! couldn't take a single picture of the ceremony! ARGH!. I came on here tonight, read the solutons, took the batteries and the memory card out, put them back in and hit the lens side of the camera agains the heel of my hand a couple times and lo and behold the screen came back on! Wish i knew to do that last night.... I'll by another Kodak, thank you very much!

Mine is doing the same thing. If you were to look in to the lens when it does not work, you will notice the shutter is shut. If you gently tap it on the side near the lens, you will see the shutter begin to open back up and you will see images once again on the LCD. You will be able to take a picture, but closing the shutter due to taking the picture, you will have to tap on it once again to get it open.

My theory is that there is a small spring that has come off of the shutter. But since I don't want to attempt to take mine apart, I am going to send it in for repair.

I hope this helps!

Black screen and pic's, same problem, the lens is not operating like it was (when turned on the lens used to move inside). I see 6 small screws on the lens housing, has anyone taken these out and got the lens to operate? if not i am going to. lets figure this thing out. it may just need a little lubricant on the track or if there is a spring.

(^same writer again..)

oh no, a camera works again when i knock it gently to a table surface (object side)

I think that problem is in the jammed shutter because it will not work when tried to take pictures with blank screen. Now the camera works good..

Same problem too. Not drop or something. One day it don't work anymore. Made in Indonesia:)

My first and last Nikon coolpix, thanks a lot!

LCD Screen

Your camera is working exactly as SLRs have worked for the first half-century since their invention. You frame the picture through the viewfinder then take the shot. The display is for menu settings and reviewing pictures after they've been taken. Newer DSLRs will let you use the display for picture-taking (and take videos) but the A200 belongs to the previous generation.

Camera not displaying images as seen through viewfinder. The screen is black. Image controls and info can be seen but the picture is just black. Takes photos which are also black; but previous photos...

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras, particularly for the SD1000. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, sometimes with lines, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open). To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.

By the way, my wife's SD1000 also has this problem every once in a while. I easily fix it by using the following steps from the link: powering on the camera, opening and closing the battery door, and flicking the end of the lens barrel with my fingertip (or you can tap it with a pencil as discussed in the link).

Nikon coolpix 4300 monitor lights up and displays

It is time to replace that camera. If the sensor is bad it will not take pictures, if the play back does not work it will take picture but no show. If you camera wont do either than it is too far gone for repair and should be replaced.

Camera does not show taken ( saved) pictures

problem is in memory card...i think. try with cleaning memory card contacts. use pure alcohol and small piece of cotton to clean dust or other dirt. if this not help, try some card reader to transfer images from camera to PC. try also with some other camera. it's possible memory card is damaged and you can't do nothing. try reinstall nikon software on your PC.

Coolpix 4300 needs driver & update for vista

this solution was originally written by a fellow expert dauphine

You can download PictureProject software from this address:

That is the only Nikon software that supports Vista since your camera is "outdated".

Here is a quote from Nikon site:

  • We had released a Windows Vista-compatible version of PictureProject, v1.7.5, for use with the models listed below, and all models that followed. PTP (models supporting the PTP protocol) and Mass storage USB transfer options can be used for camera connection. However, the camera's transfer button can not be used to transfer pictures over a PTP connection. Set the USB transfer option to Mass storage to enable the camera's transfer button.
Currently, the new Nikon Transfer and View NX will replace Picture Project as our new Image Transfer and Browser applications. These applications support the same Nikon products as Picture Project.
