According to local camera shop this is a commonproblem with this camera. Mine originally gave a low battery message and failed to turn on as previously reported but is now stone dead.

Same problem, and my 4600 is only about two years old. I've tried a couple different sets of batteries, and it just won't turn on.

  • Anonymous Dec 22, 2007

same problem. Ive got a crappy warranty that only has them send it in, not replace it. Theyve sent it in twice, and i got it back two days ago. I turned it on today before i left on vacation and it of course said battery exhausted.

I was uploading pictures to my laptop and then it just went dead and new batteries keeping giving me "Batteries Exhausted" and they are brand new. I used 3 sets of batteries, and pushed on the green light button attempting to reset the whole unit and got the "Setup" screen to come up for a few minutes and then it went dark/down again.

Yep , same problem here , same warning message, shut the camera off to
replace batteries, wouldn't turn on again... got me a Kodak on time for
    Christmas....

Would appreciate though if someone has a solution .... no hidden reset button of some sort ?

i've got the exact same problem: finished uploading some photos and the camera just went stone dead. nothing seems to work...

  • swingkid Jan 05, 2008

I seem to be having the same problem with my camera. I got it last christmas and after downloading photos from my family vacation I had forgotten to disconnect my camera and the batteries died. Has never been a problem before. I put new batteries in the camera and it won't turn on. I tried other batteries thinking that these might be faulty, but no luck. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes!! No more NIKON prodcuts for me. It will not power on despite me changing batteries. I am thoroghly disappointed. I've only had the camera for 3 years. This is absolutely ridiculous. I will write to them directly and complain. Thanks to everyone for sharing.

  • kacey71299 Jan 20, 2008

you are right. I think NIKON should just RECALL the camera if so many people are having the same problem. Its not going to happen so i will never buy NIKON again and i'll tell all friends not to buy them either.

I'm having the same problem. If anyone gets a solution please let me know!!!

  • azheatcpl Feb 13, 2008

I'm having the same problem, the camer teases you into thinking its fine. Then when you replace the batteries and take a picture it shuts down. Then it says warning batteries exhausted, even though they are new batteries.

  • kindvas Feb 15, 2008

Same exact problem. We haven't had the camera for 3 years yet. We just uploaded some pictures and now nothing. It looks like it is still on as the shutter is still open.

  • Anonymous Feb 27, 2008

I have the same problem. As soon I turn it on with new batteries it says batteries exhausted and immediately turns off.

  • Anonymous Feb 28, 2008

I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY NIKON 4600 CAMERA. BATTERY POWER WAS DOWN AFTER SHOOTING SOME PICTURES AND I INSTALLED NEW RECHARGEABLES ; THE CAMERA WOULDN'T POWER UP AT ALL. I'VE TRIED NEW RECHARGEABLES AND EVEN NEW AKALINES TO NO AVAIL. THE CAMERA HAD JUST PASSED ONE YEAR MARK AND HAD PERFORMED FLAWLESSLY BEFORE THIS HAPPENED. PREVIOUSLY , I HAD SPOKEN ABOUT HOW GREAT THIS LITTLE CAMERA WAS......GUESS I SPOKE TOO SOON.

well, same exact problem whats the solution?

  • Anonymous Apr 06, 2008

i am having basically the same issue with my camera. one day it jsut decided not to turn on. it doesnt show the exhausted battery sign but nothing is making it work. changed batteries multiple times and still nothing. brought it to the camera store and they basically said there is nothing they could do and that its cheaper to buy a new one than to have it try and be fixed. this is so annoying that so many people are having this problem with the same exact camera.

  • kacey71299 Apr 07, 2008

It is sad to see that so many people are having the same problem. Nikon should just own up and recall this camera. I have finally bought another camera and will never buy Nikon again.

  • SRAHEL Apr 19, 2008

My camera wont turn on anymore even with new HQ batteries and the access thru my computer is denied, so I cant download my last shouts !
Thank you Nikon ! When are you going to recognized a specific problem on this model ?

  • Anonymous May 05, 2008

My Nikon Coolpix 4600 is less than 2 years old. In November 2007 it initially indicated low battery then suddendly shut-down with the lens still out. I heve tried to turn it on repeatedly with re-charged batteries. I have also bought new correct specification batteries. Yet still the camera will not turn on. I am at mt witts end as i have only used the camera on four or five occasions and paid £150 for it. I am very disappointed in this camera and would like more people to know about this likely inherant design problem.

I have the same problem as well. I have had my camera for a bout 2 years. The first time this happened was in March 2007. We had been using regular AA batteries, then we decided to go lithium and bamm! The camera started working. I was elited. Then in the beginning of December 2007, it let me take one last picture and then it wouldn't come on again. The lithiums wouldn't even work. We recently took it to a camera shop and they suggested the same as the other posts. I think it would be cheaper just to buy another camera and I think there should be a recall on this camera, if there are so many other customers having the same issue. I really did enjoy it while it lasted, though.

Don't have any solution other than Nikon returning my $$$. This camera broke down faster than a Kodak cheapo.

Very disapointed to think this one was a good one because of the Nikon name.

I had mine for only a few months. Bought it when it first came out. One day it just stopped working. i took it to a camera shop and they suggested buying a new one. It has been in my computer drawer for a few years now and I ran across it today and figured I would come online to see if anyone else had this problem and/or a solution. I guess the camera was just junk. Nikon got some free money from all of us it looks like.

Battery exhausted warning and eats new duracell without even starting!!

Actually I have this camera and one that didn't stay on without fresh batteries every few minutes was given to me to tinker with. It is a software problem and if you are patient and follow the directions exactly...a simple firmware upgrade should resolve this issue for you.
Go to: http://www.general-imaging.com/us/firmware.html
Locate the blue box on the left that says QUICK LINKS and then click on FIRMWARE UPGRADES and locate your camera model. I hope this is helpful.

BATTERY EXHAUSTED

Make sure you have the internal menu for the battery selection correct.
Choosing the wrong battery may cause this.

Rechargeable batteries and alkaline batteries are not the same.

This may also be a condition and problem caused by the camera itself, and may need repair.

Battery Problem

These cameras have a internal battery that holds data for the camera to keep its settings. These batteries can be replaced but the camera has to be disassimboled to change it they should be able to be changed at a local camera shop pretty cheap.

Nikon coolpix L4 won't take pictures & turns off

I have the same camera & personally, I hate it. My camera does that all the time, sometimes, it takes a while for the picture to actually take. Try holding down the button for a while, that's what I have to do with mine. The camera sucks up all the battery energy with only a few picture takes which I really don't understand. I think that's also why it's cutting off while you're using it. Does the phrase, "Warning: Batteries exhausted" sound familar, especially right before the camera shuts off? Oh, & before I go, my personal advice to you is: Get a new camera. I don't even know why I bought mine, soon I'm getting a new one. Yay. I hope this helped you, sorry about the camera problems. Much luck! :D
