I recently bought an old (clunky) ps2 from a neighbor, the thing is spotless. not one speck of dust in the entire system, but when i insert anything into the disc drive, it states that it is 'loading'... forever... im not talking about 1-2 min, more like 15-20 min. i opened it up to make sure that there was nothing causing problems (like cat hair or bugs) but like i said earlier, the thing is spotless! what do i do, oh guru of ps2 wisdom?
First start with cleaning with the lens, also clean the reflective mirror below the lens. Then try a cd format game (blue in colour) or audio cd. If that works bonus. If it still takes long to load and there is no "disk read error", it means that the unit was dropped, don't worry there is still hope by adjusting the lazer.
Well the lense may be scratched or it may not sense the lid being totallly closed i had two that did that and man its anoying wel i hope it was one of those two couse if not i is very likely a problem with the software or hardwarre inside whuch is unfixable by you hope its cool later

This was a problem that I had on my old PS2 as well. First thing you should do is test out different types of discs, like an audio CD,DVD's, games with a silver backside, and games with a blue backside. Ifnone of them work then most likely dust is covering the lens, preventingit from reading the disc. Sometimes this can be resolved with a lens cleaner.
However, it can also mean that the laser needs to be cleaned manually (by hand) or that the laser itself needs to be realigned. Either of these can be done yourself, but if your system is still under warranty you may not want to. It involves voiding your warranty bybreaking the seal to the Playstation to gain access to the laser. If you wish to attempt this, here are the case removal instructions and here are the laser adjustment instructions.
Best of luck, let me know how it goes and if you need more help fell free to message me.
I had the same problem with my ps2. I found a solution that might help you. take a Q-tip and dip it in rubbing alcohol or water just intil damp. gently clean the eye and the rest of the disk tray. then dry it the other end of the Q-tip. when the eye dirty with dust or a hair or a small speck of paper or plastic from a disk will slow the ps2 down when loading. hope this helps!
Ok, I was having the same problem. You need to take your playstation apart and clean the laser with some alcohol. Only use alcohol as it dries faster and clear. Might as well clean the rest of the inside as well. you will be surprised at the dust it collects. After I done this my works fine.
its a ps2 problem open the ps2 up if its a big ps2 not a mini and dust it the dust is making it harder for your ps2 to read disks open it dust it and itll be like barnd new if its a small ps2 i dont know dusting the thing always help dust with somthing small a cotton ball or ear swab will work
try going inside and dusting your ps2 that should help my ps2 was malfunctioning i thought i bought a small one and went inside my big one i found thatsdusting the thing will make it read disks better and faster and the thing wont go disk error
i can only think of two things with that problem. one your lens might be scratched or the laser unit is no good. you can replace that part by removing it from an older unit or going on ebay buy it from them unit model SONY PS2 SPU3170 Laser 3170 Lens. this will solve your problem fast.
