Question about Audio Cards

Can not get mic to work

I just bought a reconditioned compaq EVO D500 Machine. I have everything working but the microphone. I was told by a tech yesterday there is a special mic driver I need for this machine.
An Everest and a Belarc tell me the onboard sound is "SoundMax Digital Audio" I can get the incoming sound but can not get the mic to work.
Have been all over the place in this computer. Even the volume control. There is a check mark in the mute box for the mic. I can not get it to uncheck.
Am really lost. I sure hope you can help me.
This PC is for an old friend who cant type well any more after his stroke.
I have this pc ready to go but It must be able to use a mic.
Can you help me?

Re: can not get mic to work

Go into the control panel and click on the sound and audio box.

click on vioce and ensure the drivers are showing in the two boxes before you should be identical. Ensure the tick is in the box which you cannot remove it wont allow you anyway.

Now test your hardware ie; microphone if you hear your own voice its activated if not trouble shoot it.

I plugged a mic to my dell laptop but it isnt working, do i need a sound card?

No, if you have a jack to plug the mic into you have a soundcard. However the mic is probably muted in the mixer software. Go to the control panel, left click on sounds and audio, then click on the advanced button; this should open the mixer in the play back mode, at the top left of the mixer go to options and select properties, a new page will come up with a radio button showing playback or recording, switch the radio button to the recording list and check everything in the checkboxes including the mic and press ok. A new mixer should come up with your recording deviced, from here you can set your microphone device volume.

E-Mu 1616m Mirco Dock Problems

LEE - Couple things to try...

First, make sure you have the EDI cable plugged in between the microdock and the sound card. Yeah... sounds obvious, but you'd be surprised.

Secondly, uninstall the software (CAREFULLY FOLLOWING THE DIRECTIONS IN THE MANUAL). Once the software is uninstalled, reinstall the software (ONCE AGAIN, CAREFULLY FOLLOWING THE DIRECTIONS IN THE MANUAL). I've found that if you do not follow the directions word-for-word, things tend to not work.

If the above doesn't help, there's a chance that the microdock is burnt.

Out of curiosity... you didn't plug/unplug anything from the microdock with the microdock powered on, did you? This could be death, if you did...

Mic problems: playback works great through interface, microphone isn't being detected

Check in contraol Panel under sounds and audio devices that you are using the Edirol and not an on board sound. It sounds like although the cards installed its not selected as the audio device to record from. You will also have to tel Adobce audition to select the Edirol as you audio card of choice as it to can be changed to select input from other sound devices.
