Can not get mic to work

I just bought a reconditioned compaq EVO D500 Machine. I have everything working but the microphone. I was told by a tech yesterday there is a special mic driver I need for this machine.
An Everest and a Belarc tell me the onboard sound is "SoundMax Digital Audio" I can get the incoming sound but can not get the mic to work.
Have been all over the place in this computer. Even the volume control. There is a check mark in the mute box for the mic. I can not get it to uncheck.
Am really lost. I sure hope you can help me.
This PC is for an old friend who cant type well any more after his stroke.
I have this pc ready to go but It must be able to use a mic.
Can you help me?

When I go to sound and audio and click on voice. They both show the same sound card but. The mic place has volume but the advanced button is greyed out. Have been in there several times.

Thanks a lot for trying. I hope you have other ideas.

My only other thought is to disable the onboard sound and try and put in a P&P sound card. But I can't remember how to do that.

Go into the control panel and click on the sound and audio box.

click on vioce and ensure the drivers are showing in the two boxes before you should be identical. Ensure the tick is in the box which you cannot remove it wont allow you anyway.

Now test your hardware ie; microphone if you hear your own voice its activated if not trouble shoot it.

Check that you hooked up all the power supply connections. Try a new motherboard battery as the old one may be dead and the bios is not working. You are evidently not getting a post beep signaling that the cpu, ram, video are good.

If the BIOS update doesnot work it probably should be a hardware issue. Check with Compaq Tech support if your system is in warranty.

Salesman is right. It's built slim for space, not efficiency. It was built for those with tiny rooms.
Sad thing is, buying hard drives etc. for laptops cost a lil more.
