Hi,
Could you please post back with the status of four lights at the back of the system title ABCD. Also does the system shows the dell logo on the screen as and when the power light comes on.

Try removing the memory and disconnect the HDD and the optical drives from the motherboard and then power on the system. If the system comes on reseat all the above components one by one.

Installed new dell motherboard per tech, installed new Dell power supply as it died too. This is a Dell Dimension 2300. It won't start.

Check all connections, to the motherboard, and also to the wall Verify that the power supply is actually switched into the ON position at the rear of the computer.

I bought a pentium 4 3.0 ghz 800 mhz & my

The motherboard chipset of the Dell Dimension 2300 Desktop PC, will not support a processor with an 800MHz Front Side Bus frequency rate.

Only Intel Pentium 4's that use a Socket 478, 1.75 Volts, and a maximum of a 400MHz FSB.

The Intel Pentium 4 HT 3.0GHz processor has an 800MHz FSB, (As you have already stated), and uses 1.475 to 1.55 Volts.

The motherboard chipset for that Dell Dimension 2300, is an Intel 845GL.

This list on Wikipedia, shows you parameters the Intel 845GL chipset supports,

Not a good outcome, sorry. Just stating the facts.

I have a dell dimension 2300 that turns on, but the power light won't light up and the screen is blank. Is it a motherboard problem or power supply problem.

I've run into the problem several times and it can be both.Your best bet would be to try the power supply first, being the cheaper and easier of the two. If you have another desktop you could try swapping the power supplies to test (make note of which plug goes where, it's fairly simple as long as you pay attention).

If you don't have a spare then it's possible a local tech store would have one you can purchase or pay them a small fee to test for you.

If swapping them doesn't work then it points at the motherboard.

Hope this helps :)
